im 40 yrs old now-always been athletic-dont feel any different than when i was 25-except 1 thing(tms in my lower back -about 1 year now)ive read hbp-and feel like all it applys to me and i believe what sarno says is true-(ive had a 15 yr back injury before) at 15 and until i was 30 did the pain let up-it was only when i got mad and started to do stiff legged deadlifts-of course warming up and slowly moving up in weight-i hurt like dickens for about three weeks but i kept at it and by the time i got to about 380lbs on the lift -something strange happened -(i got healed)now i had not read sarnos book at this time- i read an article and went by faith that working against the pain would help-now this was 10 yrs ago) and as i proceeded to go back to my lower back exercises after a two yr lay off i hurt my back with a weight that i have moved a thousand times-100lbs-the docs say herniated disc from repetitive injurys since i inially thought it was just a sprain -so after 3 days i proceeeded to go back to work out and hurt again-(note i was feeling better each time before i went to exercise-after about 8 times trying to return i figured to try and do other types of exercise-now 1 year later ive read dr sarnos book and i feel like i want to work against this pain again -im jounaling and i do have some fear that i will hurt again as ive tryed to go back to exerciseing a lot-ive noticed 1 thing though- it makes no difference if its 10 pounds or 100 i hurt the same-now with my new found knowledge-im going to start again on my weight lifting tomorrow-any advice would be great thanks .

You can't damage your back by bending and picking a light object up off the floor unless you have some type of odd pre-existing condition like severe osteoporosis.

You can hurt yourself though with an acute TMS attack that fools you into believing you have damaged your back--which is exactly what your brain wants you to think.

You also cannot slip a disc in or out in your back. This is a modern scam perpetuated by people with financial interest in keeping people in fear. This is important to know if you want to heal. The mind's eye sees a slipped disc and the brain accommodates the visual image by creating pain, perpetuating the spurious correlation.

Read about TMS, and ease your fear

Hi SteveO,

Thank you for your reply.

Is it possible to have this kind of injury by just getting up off a chair or by bending to pick a very light object off the floor? In my case, under severe stress, these were the things I did and my back went into spasm. It has happened many times since. I just don't know whether then this is an injury or not - if I see a top specialist they dismiss TMS as you said they are not aware of it or don't want to know. They have in the past gone about several slipped discs - is that actually something to worry about? Can "slipped discs" actually cause physical pain? This just gets confusing when the pain keeps coming back and you wonder is it an injury or not!

Herbert it looks like you're in a conditioned loop. You couldn't lift shingles like that if you had a real injury lurking. I used to carry bundles to the roof when I was young and ended up roofing for a short time. When I was an ironworker we pulled 30 foot sheets up 7/12s. That was tough, just like digging dirt.

The body is amazing in how it heals. You appear to have TMS. The only way to be sure is to see a TMS doc, but I never did. There just weren't any around here. Dr. Zafrides seems to be the lone ranger around these here parts.

steveo its been a long time since ive tryed to lift any weights-i did a roof job a few months back that had me lift about 90 bundles of 80 pounds above my head continuesly for about an hour .i remember i hurt the next day-but not as bad as i hurt now, and ive done almost absolutly nothing other than very light yoga in those 90 days-so if i had an injury shouldnt it have healed by now-being the only cause tms .i was going to experiment with maybe 40lbs.say indirectly for arm curls to see if the pain is any worse or less-its really weird cause other than this migraine i have i wasnt hurting at all for the past few hours until i started to think of the back pain again-if i can get my mind off from it -i find i dont hurt-its when i find myself thinking about it that i start to hurt-thanks for all the support and questions-

It is possible to hurt yourself. You can tear the structure of the body apart in serious injury: tear a ligament or tendon, cause tissue damage, and of course break a bone. Unfortunately, the medical industry will point to TMS as a real injury, further harming the individual.

Your TMS specialist is correct, the back is very strong and can take much punishment. When the person tries to pick something up or falls there is a sudden sharp pain due to trauma with the sudden loss of blood flow. This is in response to nature's way of telling us we are in danger. Pain is also intended to warn us of doing harm to our bodies.

But the tragedy that is making us worse is that doctors are routinely attributing normal wear and tear to the pain when it normally isn't the cause. Part of the problem is that they don't know about TMS since they weren't taught in school about it, and part of the problem is that they got lazy because it was easy in the DDX to point and accuse the body.

One of the more difficult aspects is determining if something is TMS or real injury since TMS can also sneak into real injuries to hide. This is why it's so important to get medical doctors on board. Only an MD can make the diagnosis, but in the end it's the individual who must decide. Injuries don't last a lifetime without a mindbody process behind them.

Can you hurt yourself = yes
Does it heal in a normal time = yes
Are most pains from injuries or TMS = TMS
Do doctors attribute almost everything to the body = yes

hello pj77-in the mornings i can hardly move -its hard to tie my shoes-i can move more freely right now that ive been up and moving for about 2 hours-i really believe or know that it has been oxygen deprivation-i was about 80 percent healed by doing yoga until i read sarnos book and started journaling-the pain got worse than ever and just today did i remember what the good doc said that it would get worse if the tms knew i was on to it-that thought sure helped alot-im in this for the run and im not backing off-the pain is like im broken in half at my waste-but when i get to moving and warm up-get to thinking about other things -usually by accident-ill find the pain has eased up-i hope this explains -confusion is a killer-

Hi SteveO,

When you say "hurt yourself", what kind on injury are you talking about? My TMS specialist talked about the back being very very strong so I'm finding it hard to differentiate between TMS pain and serious injury.

Have you had an MRI? On what basis the did doctor come to the conclusion that you had herniated discs?

It's always possible to hurt yourself. Have you given your back time to heal before each time you went back to train?

If you've had an MRI and things were checked out and you've given your back adequate time to heal in between training then you could be caught in a conditioning loop. I was caught in one for about 20 years.

Tell me more about the pattern. Also, don't work against the pain but don't yield to it either. The idea is to take the reason for the pain away, if you have TMS.
