Posted - 07/31/2012 : 21:04:35 I've been having joint pain since March. I saw my GP and a Rhuematologist and had negative markers for RA and other autoimmune things. The Rhuematologist said it wasn't OA either, but I wonder because that is something the females in my family get and they get it early - around age 40. I am 35. Anyway, I found Sarno through the joint pain issue and consequently this board. I have also been a long time back sufferer and have detailed my other TMS experiences in my other posts. I have not seen a TMS dr. as one is not nearby, but I have been told by Drs that my joint pain (along with other previous ailments) were "stress induced". So... After reading and believing, I saw the joint pain massively decrease. Except for some pain in the top finger joints, esp thumb and index finger of my right hand. I have come to accept TMS as the root cause.
Since the near disappearance of the joint pain (it was all over my body) I have had two other things I believe to be TMS. Both are things that are embarrassing to discuss, but with both I was able to see them instantly disappear once the Dr. saw me and said they were nothing. So, I have to think TMS. Both are genuine health issues that are common and caused by real things, yet both disappeared with the Dr's reassurance.
With my typical pattern that has emerged over the past couple of years, I have about a week's break of worry after the symptom disappears, then I find something else physical to worry about. Well, it's been a week since the Dr. magically took my other symptoms away with the words: Nothing is wrong - and here I am back to the joint pain. I thought it was gone. I credited Sarno's and Steve O's books. And here we are again with the Fing joint pain. It's really strong in my finger joints, which never entirely went away, but its back in other parts as well. It's like my body has been invaded again. I'm feeling like I need to run back to the Dr. for reassurance or further testing. It doesn't help that a Rhuem friend of mine (who I did not see, but have told about my issues) said I should keep going back and keep getting bloodwork because RA can come on slowly. This contradicted the advice of the other Rhuem so I have tried to ignore it but I believe the TMS monster has hung onto her words for fuel for the fire. My TMS-educated self says: "do not run to the doctor - that is part of this unhealthy cycle I have created of needing reassurance - I have been - nothing was found) - this is what I should do - right? I really am trying to work against this, but I feel so weak against it at the same time.
So, I appreciate the help that has been offered to me before. But does anyone know if Osteoarthritis can be TMS related? And I'm tyring to think of ways to break the vicious worry cycle. ANY advice is appreciated.
A weird thing about the joint pain in fingers is this: The other night it was just my right thumb & top index finger joint that were bothering me. Well, I saw my mom that night. Somehow her arthritis came up and she showed me her hands which I haven't really gotten a close look at I guess for years - her hands are deformed at the knuckes from her OA. I was shocked. Guess what? I woke up the next morning with almost all of my fingers hurting. Is this how TMS works? Is it THAT ridiculous?!
Also, I can easily see the major stress going on in my life right now - mainly marital discord .. I see that. I see a therapist. Yet this persists. Unlike many of you I'm not the typical perfectionist type. I do not bottle up feelings. However, I can say with confidence that my whole mind (including my subconscious ) is burned out with dealing with emotional & relational issues. After a pretty awful childhood I feel like my subconscious has lost it's steam. (?) Thanks |

Thank you JP, I'm thinking about it. I'm wearing out my welcome in Kali by thinking too much. I just came back from a very nice 2,000 mile road trip to Canada; it's looking very soothing up there. |

If you're RA Doctor felt your joints and they felt healthy to him or her, and your blood test came back negative then you are good to go. X-ray wouldn't really show anything with RA unless you have had RA for a long time.
I used to get therapy for anxiety by Anxiety Center! The therapist are EXCELLENT! They understand Anxiety and what it does to the body because they all had anxiety at recovered from it.
One of the BIGGEST symptons of anxiety is JOINT PAIN!!! I was told it takes the body 4 times longer to recover from anxiety. Meaning if you've been stressed out for four months it takes 4 times longer to recover.
You're body and mind have to calm down...Then symptons will illiminate!
Good Luck,

I am a visual artist so not being able to use my hands would affect a lot for me, so yes, I fear RA too.
quote: Here is my opinion if your first rheumatologist said nothing is wrong and you had blood work done and I am sure that he or she also checked your joints.. Quite asking your RA doctor friend for advise...
Yes, he checked my joints, though not with an Xray, just with an exam. I have not spoken to my Dr friend about any of it since I was totally freaked out by her comments.
quote: Do you have any swelling and or stiffness in the mornings??? If they answer is no, then you DON'T HAVE RA!!!
I have had some very minor swelling in that my rings have been tight. However, stiffness is not any worse in the mornings. Also with RA you have hot red joints. None of that either. I will say that my dad had hot red swollen joints in his hands and feet. He saw numerous docs and even tested mildly positive for the RA factor. However, the final doc he saw said if he did have RA, it was very mild. He said go home, don't worry about, don't think about it and only come back if you have further issues. He went home, didn't worry about it anymore and it went away. That was 3 years ago. Weird, huh? I believe my dad has TMS, not from that but from major on-again off-again back issues.
quote: more reassurance will never make you well. You'll just keep needing more reassurance and it will never end...You'll just keep the pain cycle going.
You are exactly right. I know this. It's hard to put into practice though. And I agree; depression/anxiety can cause joint pain. In fact, my "joint pain" is actually more tendon pain, which is identified as TMS in Sarno's book. Have you had 'joint pain' too????
I'm having a lot of fear and anxiety over all of this. I guess it's because it was pretty much GONE after about 6 weeks of reading and believing Sarno + Steve O's books. And now a relapse... Kind of miserable. Like maybe all that didn't work and here is this terrible disease coming back again.

Posted - 08/01/2012 : 16:53:30 Rheuamatoid arthritis is a whole different animal from osteoarthritis. RA is rare and auto-immune related. Osteo is your common gray hair of the spine type thing that we get as we age. Rheumatologists inherited the treatment of all joint disorders by default. |

I am not experts, but, maybe I can help!!1
I think what Tennis Tom means, by graying hair of the spine is when we get older it is natural for bones to start showing osteoarthritis!
It's just normal aging and nothing to be concerned about. Dr. Sarno calls this "greying of bones or spine" which is not meant to cause any pain.
I, like you have a BIG fear of RA!!!! I play guitar.
Here is my opinion if your first rheumatologist said nothing is wrong and you had blood work done and I am sure that he or she also checked your joints..
If they say you're good to go..Then believe it....If you're pain dispated after the good news and you also read Dr. Sarno's book and it also went away...Then you probably have TMS..
Quite asking your RA doctor friend for advise...
Do you have any swelling and or stiffness in the mornings??? If they answer is no, then you DON'T HAVE RA!!!
Again I know the fear that you are going through but seeking more reassurance will never make you well. You'll just keep needing more reassurance and it will never end...You'll just keep the pain cycle going.
By the way Anxiety can create PAIN in the joints!
Take Care,

Many years ago I attended "ARTHRITIS WEEK," at a prestigious fat farm in Arizona. The food was superb, you could eat all you wanted and still lose five pounds a week, with chocolate syrup on top of it. Underwater tread mills so you didn't sweat. The arthritis workshop had three top docs in attendance. One wrote "the book" popularizing glucosamine-chondrotin, one wrote a book on fibro. I overheard these docs speaking of their own surgeries past and future.
I learned that arthritis takes a hundred different forms--they don't know what causes it, how to cure it or how to treat it. IMHO, arthritis is a catch-all for gray hair of the gray hair, and is as common as aspirin--most likely much or mostly TMS.
At the fat-farm we got daily blood tests and physicals. They tried to pin me with a sleeping disorder that was starting to become popular--it would only be a few hundred dollars extra and I would get hooked up to a lot of devices in a special sleep disorders treatment room--I could hardly wait to get out of there.
