I don't recall seeing much on this forum about faith/prayer/religion
and TMS recovery. Dr. Sarno in his books seems not to mention it. I am
not advocating for or against faith/prayer in the TMS recovery process.
I just want to get better and have my life back.
My wife this morning told me that she thought I needed more faith in
God to help me recover, and it got me to thinking about whether other
TMS sufferers had incorporated faith into their healing. |

And one more, I read some where that in 2009 Pope Benedict XVI approved the claim that a Boston man was “miraculously cured” of back pain after praying to Cardinal John Henry Newman, a British theologian who died in 1890.

I myself believe having strong faith in some higher power is in deed a very powerful force. It sometime elliminate all fear thoughts inside our mind. Those crazy suicide bombers in the Middle East have no fear because of their faith. Mary Eddy Baker, the founder of Christian Science (the only major religion founded by a woman) over came a debilitating back injury by faith in Christ alone. Many tribal people in the Amazon jungle were cure by a Shaman just because they have faith in the shaman.
I don't think "God" do anything to help the patients here, it is just their strong believe is helping them. They feel protected, they feel someone will be watching over them and that make them feel safer, calmer, and able to accept more, relax more, which help with the immune system and with tms/anxiety symptoms.
I wonder if the "dark force" (as in Star war) would be any help to their worshipers? :) |

I have some thoughts of my own on this, but my "goodist" nature keeps me from wanting to discuss it here lest anyone disagree with me and, hence, reject me (laughing - kinda).
Anyway, I certainly am open for discussion on this point and have some thoughts and opinions I'm working through on this subject. I would welcome conversation about it if you wish to discuss it. Send me an email or private message or something and let me know.

HI Goodney,
One doctor who DOES delve into the faith/prayer/religion aspect of TMS is Scott Brady, who wrote "Pain Free for Life" ... he went up to work w/ Dr Sarno (on a couple of occasions?). Besides what he says about that in his book, there was also a GREAT video of a (TMS) presentation he gave, posted online and he talks a little about his own faith and how he feels religious people are great "people-pleasers" etc ... if you look for the video and can't find it, let me know and I'll see if I can find a url for it in my files...

TT I hear what you are saying and I don't in the least want to upset anyone or cause any controversy. I was very hesitant to even bring up the subject of faith as it might relate to TMS, but I was curious. I think one of my issues is that my severe TMS has shaken my faith mightily. |

Anything that can bring peace and tranquility into one's personal life as well as a sense of meaning and purpose is always a good thing. If prayer/ spirituality / faith or religion can achieve this then go for it. Faith is not something that can be forced on someone, however, but has to be cultivated from within regardless of what others tell you what you should or should not believe. One either believes or they don't -- that is what faith is. |

Oh, there are a few fleeting references to such concepts. Dr. Sarno makes mention of a "Celestial Architect" and somewhere else about Hasidic Jewish patients of his being amenable to accepting TMS. Accepting the Good Doctor's theory has been likened to a "leap of faith". If you do a "SEARCH" here you may unearth some lively discussion from the good 'ol days involving those taboo topics. Generally, we try to avoid any unpleasantness here which might ensue from discussing politics, religion, sex, distraction or TMS because it may aggravate folk's symptoms. |
