Doctors overdiagnosing healthy people as sick: Researchers

Driven in part by commercial interests, doctors around the world are overdiagnosing and overtreating illnesses in healthy people, an editorial published in the British Medical Journal says.
Aside from being a threat to human health, treating people unnecessarily wastes health-care resources, wrote Ray Moynihan, a researcher at Bond University in Australia.
Modern medicine, with better diagnostic technology and a focus on early detection, means we're all being looked at as diseases waiting to happen, Moynihan says. That leads doctors to prescribe preventative measures and treatments for conditions that may never appear.
For instance, a large Canadian study in 2008 found that almost a third of people diagnosed with asthma may not have the condition. Another study of almost a million Canadian children raised concerns about "the potential harms of overdiagnosis and overprescribing" for mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, autism and ADHD because the descriptions of those illnesses have been expanded.
The editorial says people at low risk receive permanent medical labels and lifelong therapies that won't necessarily benefit them, driven in part by commercial or professional interests.
The resources wasted on unnecessary care can be much better spent treating and preventing genuine illness, not pseudo-disease, the authors say.

Good find Shawn! My gf was cured of her lifelong asthma just by hearing me talk about how it could be TMS from Dr. Sarno's books. In my part of the woods terms like bipolar, ADHD, and autism are now tossed about quite liberally. I'm sure there are true cases of these conditions but much of it I feel is an excuse to not have to discipline children and medicate instead.
