My sister who is a psychotherapist and a number of friends of mine in the field (who know of my TMS) have been telling me to read into the latest iteration of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, ACT.

Apparently this form of therapy utilizes mindfulness to help the patient accept negative thought as opposed to (just) changing or re-working negative thought (I think thats the gist of it, although its far more complex than that).

I am huge fan of anything that helps me be more "present" (and I have had great success with CBT) so I picked up "Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life" by Dr. Steven Hayes as this has been recommended to me by numerous people now.

Interested in hearing what people's thoughts were on ACT and if anyone has heard of the above title.

Avik, are you doing the exercises in the book? I have read the Amazon reviews and some have mentioned that some of them are quite odd. The title attracts me though. Story of my life. I am far too much "in my own head", so much so lately that I am struggling to read anything and retain it. I can focus on short forum posts but that' s about it. Frustrating. My reading wish list is growing by the day..

I have read "the happiness trap" which is one of the best books I have read. It's based on ACT...read it, it's good! I have found resisting negative thoughts pointless.......it's like resisting gravity. The idea is to accept the negative thought and let it pass. Don't dwell on it or buy into the negative thought. This works well for me, I choose to think more positive and self serving thoughts....for no other reason than it makes my life more pleasant.

Interesting Darko...

I am currently reading Get Out of Your Mind and into Your Life by Hayes.
I find the overall idea very refreshing and I personally welcome anything that helps me be more "present".
