Possibility of TMS?
I met him the summer before he coached at OSU. I was 15 miles into a 20 miles run on a hot day, and my back seized up. I was laying on the ground trying to stretch things out. I was also 5 miles from my car.
A man stood over me and asked if I was OK, and if there was anything he could do for me. It was Coach Matta. I told him I was fine, and that I was just stretching out my back.
He left, and I continued to stretch- and feel a bit sorry for myself. Then, a guy missing part of his L leg and wearing a prosthesis came cycling by me. I stared at him for a minute and suddenly realized all my back pain had disappeared. I ran back to the care without any further issues.
Coach Matta lives in a world of high stress. I sure wish I could direct him to Dr. Sarno (yeah, I know he's retired now,) or one of his associates. Unfortunately I don't know him enough to suggest anything. I do wish him the best, and I'll bet that if OSU wins their next two games, that back is going to feel a lot better! |

Posted - 03/30/2012 : 04:34:48 ohiostate, well done you! For sending that book, and for running those marathons! It's lovely to hear of someone who refutes a dire prognosis like that, because so many of us have had them. Doctors really don't know everything!

Posted - 03/29/2012 : 10:36:27 I sent a copy. I'm no physician, but at least one can read about tms and explore further.
I had one ugly mri myself, and the radiologist told me to quit running or "find a good surgeon." That was in 2007. In the year 2009, I ran 7 ultramarathons, ranging in distance from 31 to 62 miles. No back pain since.

It's likely he has never heard of tms, and he may discard it as some kind of "out there" self-help book.
But then again, maybe it'll pique his interest.
Dr. Peter Zafirides practices in Columbus. Sure wish they'd spend some time together.

Mail the coach a copy of HBP !

Nice observation. Its pretty interesting how many of us get all wrapped up / stressed out with all our problems in life and TMS,,, and a majority have no serious disease, enough food on the table and all our working appendages.
Take care, -Stryder |
