Posted - 03/27/2012 : 21:11:21 I suffered from real pain, and it was real bad for quite a few years. I couldn't exercise and if my back "went out" I would be in bed for 2 or 3 days with spasms so bad I had to crawl to the bathroom. So the pain was real, and it was bad, ok? Then I read "Mind Over Back" and in a matter of weeks I was cured. I have been virtually pain free and very active for the past 20 years (I am 58).
So having experienced this "miracle cure" of course I want to share it with others. Back pain is epidemic - you hear people complaining about their back pain constantly, and you want to help them. They keep going to doctors of all types, and everyone has a different suggestion, oh, do these exercises, take these drugs, go to a back cracker, get needles stuck in you, oh, only surgery will fix it... makes me want to scream!!
I used to listen to WPLJ in New York, there was an on-air guy called Rocky Allen that I enjoyed listening to. He was going in for back surgery and I wanted to write him or call him and tell him about Dr Sarno, but I didn't. He ended up in a wheel chair after his surgery.
But what do you do? I long ago realized I couldn't tell the whole story in 5 minutes, so what I do now is give people the book (I have multiple copies of "Mind Over Back" and the mind body prescription) and I just tell them it worked a miracle for me, and if it helps you great because it's cheaper than drugs and doctors and a heck of a lot better than surgery, and if it doesn't work for you then all you have done is read a book and learned something new.
I just find it very frustrating that it is not more widely accepted and that there is so much unnecessary pain and suffering going on and unnecessary, expensive and ineffective treatment going on. All that surgery! It blows my mind.
What do you do?
Oh, and I found this forum today because there is a discussion on another forum I frequent about pinched nerves, and all the sufferers are chiming in about their pain and diagnosis and what treatment worked for them. I am not even going to contribute.
20 years backpain-free Thank you Dr Sarno! |

Posted - 04/01/2012 : 17:11:15 Interesting...
I had a slip on my porch which definitely injured my back, but for the two years before this, it would "give" out doing something simple.
But the injury is now a year past, and there is nothing on the MRI showing a problem. Diagnosis is "Lumbar Strain" and yet it has overtaken my life and causes me much mental anguish.
For months I was having spasms over the smallest movements. Now I am doing more and more, but bending forward from a standing position terrifies me. My paraspinal muscles are tight and expecting pain. Basically anything using my low back as the "lever" it was designed to be terrifies me because it has caused pain so many times. Just bending over and tying my shoes is mentally blocked because of fear of my back going out.
But how to get past this?
I am actually totally open to the Mind Body idea. In fact, it seems obvious to me that is what is going on with my fear if nothing else. Because I have had other "pain syndromes" in the knee, hip, and psoas that lasted for years then disappeared, these seem to be the early precursors of TMS. They have no medical explanation and did not respond to medical treatment.
I am speaking to my unconscious mind all the time now, telling it that I see what it is doing - and I understand it is terrified and pissed off. When I feel pain, I am going psychological more and more and not thinking physically as much.
"The pain is TMS and not something dire and serious..." "The fear and tension in my back is my unconscious telling me something through my body. Now that I see what it is doing, it will have to find another way to communicate..."
Does this sound like the right track?

So when your back goes out, is it due to a strain or injury? Or is a something like when you are bending over to wash your face it "gives out"?
I'm curious because I am trying to understand TMS back pain. I know some people have a constant pain while others have a mechanical pain brought on by certain motions.
Does it matter which type?
Thanks.
Doesn't it seem silly that washing your face could cause back pain?
I used to be afraid to open the windows in my house without be completely centered and stable.
Car accident = injury "back gives out" frequently = TMS

Posted - 03/30/2012 : 20:22:21 There's too much $$$ at stake....TMS puts way too many people out of work.
I've helped a bunch of my relatives and friends by recommending the Sarno books. But that's really about all you can do.

Posted - 03/28/2012 : 20:41:44 I have MOBP and MBP and lend them out regularly. Some accept it and some don't. I used to get frustrated that some just don't "get it". Now I just figure one is better than none. |
