If I reduce my pain medication and the pain increases does this mean that my mind hasn't got the message yet that the pain is psychological?
I have just completed my second week on the programme but when I reduced my meds this week the pain increased. Just wondered what others think?

Posted - 03/12/2012 : 15:21:22 thanks for the replys, I will start reducing the meds and see how it goes. When I started taking the meds around three months ago I did get a reduction in pain. I am sure I have tms (I have fibromyalgia type symptoms but all tests came back normal!) but I do feel a bit nervous about reducing the meds so my mind cant have accepted the diagnosis fully. Early days, only three weeks into the program so will be patient. thanks again |

Hey,
so there are different ways to address this issue.
Before I knew about TMS, I had to take 100 mg of diclofenac every 3-4 days to decrease the pain in my left ellbow. Taking it constantly did not make any difference. Sometimes, the pain got so bad, that I took one pill every day nevertheless. Interestingly, at some point, the pills would not work anymore at all. The pain would be at level similar to without the meds. Then I used strong pain medication such as tramadol. At first it worked, but after sometime it stopped working. I was very confused about this fact.
After I found out about TMS, I experimented with the pain pills a bit. If I was in pain, I would start taking about 10-20 drops of e.g. tramadol. In the first 20 minutes, the pain would decrease. Then, after about an hour, the pain would come back worse. I took more and more (healty doses, nothing a doctor has not recommend to me in the past), with the pain increasing constantly. This pain medication can relieve you from a lot of pain, but did not help my muscle/tendon pain at all even at high doses. I realized that very moment that all it ever did was shadow the real cause, thus working as a placebo. Further, after believing in TMS, I guess my mind is trying very desperately to keep the pain going after taking meds to throw me back into old thinking habits.
I have not taking pain medication/anti-inflammation medication for about 1.5 months now and the pain is a lot better than with the meds. It also comes and goes even when I leave the meds in the box. It never had anything to do with the meds helping the real cause.
I recommend you try to really start believing in the cause of the pain and leaving the meds away. After all, you taking meds and the pain getting better is making you believe in the meds, but not TMS.
And remember that every real injury should heal in about 4-6 weeks (broken bones/ripped tendons). Muscle pain from working out goes away in days. If you have something coming and going without a real accident, it is very likely TMS.

I did not cease taking pain pills, which were only VERY MARGINALLY effective, when I first undertook Dr Sarno's method.
In my opinion, taking the pain medication had no bearing, either pro or con, on my success with the program.
However, I would think that if they are providing considerable relief to you, they may cloud the issue and mask the success you get from the mental/emotional exercises. And I do think it's vitally important that you recognize and acknowledge when the TMS methods do start working. But it would seem if you go from 10 or 15% relief to suddenly 40 or 50% relief, that would be pretty clear cut feedback.
