I would like to share with you my TMS symptoms,and I would like to hear yor opinions on it.I have had insomnia for five years ,strange pressure pain above my nose in between my eyes (sometimes when I press on it I get an intense shooting pain through my head or to my chest)for four years ,chest palpatations for two years,itching for three years ,germ phobia /OCD for two years,chronic fatigue for one year, hand and wrist pain for six months,and fifteen months ago I had one single manic/dillusional episode .I went to Dr. Sarno a couple of months ago and he told me that all of these are TMS including the episode.I was suprised that he said that the dillusional episode that I had is also TMS.The truth is that I was going through a very stressful time right before the episode.I was hardly sleeping ,I was trying to change my personality all at once ,I was very angry at someone for what he had said about me,and I was dealing with a lot of past hurt and anger.I would like to know your opinions about the manic episode being part of TMS.The truth is that there are alot more details of what happened prior and during the episode that would support Dr. Sarno's diagnoses,but I don't have the time right now to write all of it . |

It is impossible for Dr. Sarno to cover every possible TMS symptom in his book.
Many people come to this forum looking for proof that their specific symptom is TMS. I think this is a fruitless exercise. TMS is less about the symptoms and more about the person. If you see yourself described in the pages of Dr. Sarno's book, then there is a good chance you have one or more TMS symptoms.
Now, you are questioning the diagnosis based on a technicality. I think you can rest assured that Dr. Sarno grasped the extent of your episode. If you think about how TMS works, you should accept that any autonomic activity can be a target. It is not a stretch by any means to say that the chemical changes involved in a manic episode could be triggered by TMS.
In any case, it was an isolated incident, right? So why do you continue to dwell on it? Perhaps it is part of the same syndrome ... a distraction to prevent you from accepting the TMS diagnosis. |

Dave, I was just wondering why Dr. Sarno doesn't mention anything about manic episodes etc... in his work.In addition, I am not sure if I was clear enough in telling Dr. Sarno about the details of the episode.When I spoke to Dr. Sarno I only had a chance to describe to him the dillusional part of the episode but I think I left out the fact that I was having racing thoughts ,rapid speech,and a feeling like I had a ton of energy despite the fact that I was sleep deprived ,which are all part of a manic episode.Dr. Sarno had told me ,based on my description,that what I had was a dillusional episode .However, I'm wondering if what he said applies to a manic episode as well.When I asked him how what I had is different from Bipolar disorder,he replied by saying that people with bipolar get very depressed and they act really nuts.The truth is that I am wondering if I am the only one who had a manic episode as TMS. P.S. sorry if I wasn't clear the first time. In response to your question;I had an MRI and CAT skan three years ago to check out the pain in my head. |

If you got it straight from the horse's mouth, why are you looking for confirmation from a bunch of normal folks? 
The one symptom I would be concerned about is the pain between the eyes. Did you have that checked out?
TMS is all about affecting the chemistry in the body. I have no doubt this could potentially include intense psychological symptoms like you experienced. It's all about protecting you, and sometimes the mind feels that very strong distractions are necessary. |
