Hi everyone..I am new here but not new to TMS! I learned about Dr. Sarno about 3 years ago. I've had back pain off and on since I've been about 20(am now 37).I didn't have too much of it till I was 30, but after turning 30 I slowly made a progression of worsening pain over the years. Reading Sarno has helped me make a definite improvement. I can see my personality tendencies that he describes SO WELL.

I've recently been under a LOT of stress lately and have developed tinnitis mainly in one ear. I woke up one morning and my ear felt clogged and it was ringing and still is ringing 2 months later. It drives me crazy! I have sensitive hearing so it is extra frustrating to me. The freaky thing is this is the same ear that has been exposed to some annoying noises my neighbors had been making as I lied on my side in bed trying to sleep. I am a light sleeper so I went through about 3 months of being woken up a lot by them. Thankfully they have become a lot less noisy in the meantime. My ears haven't been damaged by loud noise, I've always been careful about that. The clogged/full feeling in the ear has gotten about 50% better but the ringing hasn't improved much at all. I try hard not to focus on it but it is very hard for me not to obsess over it to tell the truth. I can ignore it maybe about half the time. I've been using Dr. Sarno's techniques towards it for about 3 weeks now.

My concerns are... since his techniques focus mainly on pain, will this work? I also know it is not helpful to monitor it so much but dang it is so hard not too! Any tips on how to stop monitoring a symptom so much? And last but not least, my 3rd question is this--I have a tiny amount of doubt that it is mabye NOT TMS, like some crazy thing went wrong in my ear and caused this--could that impede any progress I might have? I went to the ear doctor and he said everything looked normal well as he could tell. Sorry for all the questions...this symptom is new to me..I'm used to dealing with/working on the TMS PAIN, not the TMS equivalents. Thanks!

Erica

Erica, I didn't have a full ENT work-up. I expect that this is probably a good thing to do. I'm like you that I have been focusing on the things that caused me pain. In my case, it was primarily chronic tension headaches. Secondary was back, neck, and shoulder pain. I honestly didn't focus on the dizziness or ear ringing at all. I just noticed that they had stopped. They weren't chronic to begin with for me. They would come and go every couple of months and last for like a week. In addition to dizziness going away, I have also had some other odd symptoms that weren't painful that have also gone away. I can only guess that they were also symptoms of TMS but that they just hadn't become painful. As for the things that were/are painful, I'm at about 90% healed now. I believe in TMS and that there is nothing actually wrong with my body. I don't fear the pain anymore. In fact, when I get some, I just realize that there is one more subliminal thing that I need to resolve and experience psychologically. Hope this helps.

tmsjptc...Did you treat your ringing in the ears as a TMS symptom? If so, how long did it take to go away?

Nycmom..I went to the ENT doctor and he made sure my ear wasn't clogged and looked good. The only thing I haven't done is a hearing test. My husband took a hearing test there and his hearing was normal. I can sometimes hear things he can't so I don't think it's necessary for now plus my insurance doesn't cover the cost.

Thank you both for the get better and good luck wishes.

Eric, have you had a full ENT workup to rule out the regular stuff? Feel better!!!

Erica, the doubt will get you. You need to be 100% committed to get the results you seek. Even if you are wrong about it, there is nothing to lose by treating as just TMS. As for me, I wanted to comment because I am completely relieved of occasional dizziness and ringing in the ears that I used to have. i wish you the best of luck.
