Posted - 02/21/2012 : 13:50:16 It all started 29 years ago I picked up a box that I thought had fluff nothing in it while moving, I was 26 then, but it was heavy dishes. My back went out. I was on the floor in pain for two weeks. After that every few years I would get back problems, was told my back was weakened by first problem and believed it. Also because I was thin and carried my daughter on one hip for many years. I went to back doctor, physical therapy, later massage, tried swimming, walking, etc but always came back. Then one summer 1999 I was camping and hiking and I felt sciatica pain real bad, I immediately thought it was due to hike. From then until march of 2000 it got worse and worse until my leg was numb, couldn't walk and I had herniated disk that ruptured and surgery. Just 3 days later all pain gone and I started walking and swimming. Was afraid to do more after being told by doctor you can reherniate if not careful.
So more years go by, only problems were when I sat too long, I had full time desk job. In 2005 we semi retired early to the mountains. I thought no desk job no problems, wrong every vacation trip to Hawaii back problems, I thought from long air flight. I joined a local gym and they said there I needed to do more, so I joined a class for light weights and aerobics but never could go for more than a few months without back pain. So I tried physical therapy again 3 times over 3 years a few months each time. I wanted to hike with my new friends.
I joined hiking club last summer and had to stop after 4th hike because of back pain.
In one last burst of hope I made appt with owner of therapy place. She is more hands on and at least believes the mind has a big part in it. She was working with me currently when I had my last accute attack a week ago. I had gone back to gym and was doing also a DVD of exercises when I got bad hip pain and sciatica the next day. I had attack on day of therapy getting into car pain was intense, she sent me to doctor who gave me shot for swelling, and I got MRI yesterday. Meanwhile I had been reading Dr Sarno's book on healing back pain. I finished it while I was in extreme pain.
I spent an hour the next morning, still in pain thinking back over my life and realizing every single time my back went out including the first time, major emotional things were going on. By end of hour I said, that is me, fear, anger and other emotions are causing this. Within a hour 3/4 of my pain was gone. I still have. The other 1/4...
I want to learn all I can, it's hard when spouse, friends, don't believe and still want you to do regular medical things. Right now I am waiting for call to hear results. I mostly believe its all my mind but I have a few lingering things, this has just been such a long journey for me to change all at once is hard, especially without hearing Dr Sarno say, yes that is what you have! |

Hi Steve,
It's founder was a very intelligent man with the monicker of Austin Gary. He got fed up with the argumentation one day and checked out. I wonder if he'll ever check back in again. Dave was kind enough to take it over and moderates with a light touch. He posts occasionally and his are the most concise and TMS accurate. I like the look of the forum too! Thanks for your contribution, it's nice to have TMS experts here on occasion. We have some TMS doctors here from time to time. Steve, do you think Dr. Sarno knows about this forum and has ever read it?
Cheers tt
p.s. Email Dave to put your book on the Forum's book list. |

Posted - 02/22/2012 : 14:39:25 Wow was I wrong about my doctor! She was about 75% open to Dr Sarno's ideas. She even wrote down name of book and author and going to recommend to some of her patients that she can tell the pain is mostly emotional.
My MRI just showed normal aging, scaring where my last surgery was and she said a tiny something at L3 but no herniation even! She was thrilled I healed so quick and was open to my saying it was right after I read book.
I told her all my back stuff was after emotional stuff, she did say she still thought it started out as something small physically and that the emotional part made it a hundred times worse than it should be. Sounded to me like as close as a doc can come who hasn't studied this.
We left happy and she said I could cancel next months appt if pain gone.

Posted - 02/21/2012 : 16:44:06 Thanks Steve and I will check out your book. My husband is bringing me The Divided Mind home from the library later today. I was so happy the larger next town over had it.
Nurse called and they had results and I have appt tomorrow to get it. I changed to this new doctor a year ago because she is younger mid 40's and into sports herself and she helped me get off beta blocker I was on for high blood pressure to a mild tab that I have more energy with. I started those meds about 7 yrs ago.
The only problem with new doc is she doesn't like it if you question her judgement. Like when I asked questions about new meds I was afraid to take she said you either trust me or not. Because I thought I was being fearful (I deal with a lot of fear) I went ahead.
So tomorrow I am wondering whether I should mention the reason I have healed so fast this past week is dr Sarno's book...or just let her think it was bed rest. My friends last night at bookclub all took it personally when I told them, thought I was saying they shouldn't trust their doctors, I said I am talking about me!!
