Posted - 02/18/2012 : 06:13:23 Well I didn't expect a miracle...
Sciatica picked up in the left leg in the evening, like normal and hurt like normal in bed. Walking first thing in the morning was better, so there is improvement there...
Any reason why the pain would increase in the evening?? Especially right before I head to bed.
Is there a tips sheet for battling TMS?
I understand the 'dealing with your emotions', now just have to practice it more. Curious if there's other things I can be doing to improve the situation.
I plan on returning to my bike, starting today....Slowly of course...
Being on the bike just improves my mental state as a whole and I know that is a good thing.

Posted - 02/18/2012 : 10:13:50 Thanks for the kind words on my parent's :)
I understand about the faucet comment in regards to the sciatica. I know this will take time, for sure. My goal right now is to get it under control so I can ride and train. Then I will go from there.
I think back and realize that I've been dealing with this for years. Every time I get an ache and pain that became some what chronic I would always obsess on it. Of course once I figured something out to relieve that pain then something would pop up.
First it was back, then my knees, then my ankles, thrown in what I thought was a hiatus hernia, hay fever and acid reflux...Hmmmmm...
I fit Dr. Sarno's personality traits to a tee...
My biggest issue I believe is my perfectionist traits...When I see a problem I research it and figure out how to fix it, or find someone to fix it....
This is not a quick and easy fix, it will take time to fully understand it and deal with it.. |

Posted - 02/18/2012 : 07:19:09 Hi rbart, I read your story and was very touched. Your parents obviously cared for you and your brother but may not have been able to show this outwardly. I am so glad you happened upon this site. It appears that by reading posts you were able to recognize and acknowledge so many things all at once that you were overwhelmed, but in a good way.
I have suffered from my own bouts of sciatica. Despite having breakthroughs and revelations during my last episode it still took time for the symptoms to settle down. You can't switch them off like a tap (or is it faucet over in Canada?). It sounds like the pain is easing and it will get better each day. You are doing the right thing by getting on your bike, not letting the pain prevent you from living your life and doing activities that bring you joy.
As for other things you could do, some people meditate or write in a journal. I find just breaking my routine and doing something spontaneous helps to detract from my symptoms. There is also a Structured Education Programme on www.tmswiki.org. Tonight there is a live chat hosted by wiki members. One of the moderators posted about this earlier. Why not check this out if you have time?
Best wishes. |
