I'm 32 and I've been challenged by pain in my left leg since November 2011 which has drastically improved over the recent weeks due to my discovery of Dr. Sarno's books. At the onset of the pain I was completely consumed by the physical symptoms mostly due to a diagnosis given to me by a chirorpractor whose methods and treatment plan only seemed to make things worse. After about a week's worth of visits I stopped going to him because it just wasn't helping and I really didn't believe in his practice and the proclaimed benefits that I would get after weeks and months of having to see him. Well that and the copay that surely depleat any money I had in savings.

I was also seeing my primary care physician who simply had diagnosed me with sciatica after a series of tests. This was essentially the same as the chirorpractor had said with the difference being the negative outlook stated by the chiropractor. My primary care was much more optimistic about conservative treatment, referring me to physical therapy to exercise my legs and stengthen my core.

Now I'm going into December and I am noticing that the pain is essentially traveling to different points in my leg. It hits my hip, my calf, my ankle, the top of my foot, different places for about a week at a time and I begin to think it's not really what the "experts" are telling me. Also, by this point, I've turned to information found all of over the Web about the various points of my leg experiencing pain and some of its good but I think for the most part all of it's bad. Looking at it now, after reading Sarno, it really only reinforced the programming of my brain to think physical and was doing nothing to make me better. BUT, what it did do was lead me to find Sarno's books on Amazon.

So fast forward to today, I've read through each of his books twice, I've been reading this forum as well as following the daily program outlined on the TMS Wiki and I'm to the point where it's essentially no longer a pain issue but a feeling of being uncomfortable and after what I've been feeling over the last 2 months I can say I've come very far after gaining knowledge about TMS.

What's led me to writing this post are the sleep issues I've been dealing with. Since the beginning of my issues I would wake up with pain in my hip that as time went on would be worse and worse. I would struggle to get myself out of bed and then when I would it would take me 20-30 of walking around and holding myself up for the pain to discipate enough for me to feel like I could move around freely. It would take me up to an hour or more to feel truly well enough to lay back down again to get some sleep and needless to say this became very disruptive. Fortunately and unfortunately this was occurring through November and December when I would have lots of time off from work so that on the nights I would really struggle I would be able to rest at home during the days I had off but then it made it very difficult to get through the Holidays and various travels associated with them.

I'm to the point today where I no longer wake up in pain but I wake up none the less. I'm basically sick of it and I struggle some days not to think about it to much. When I wake up its like I need to get up and walk around like I did when I was in pain to make myself comfortable enough to fall back asleep accept the pain is not there anymore. I could keep writing and writing about this but I think I've made my point. Has anyone else experienced anything like this and have any tips?

hi there,
congratulations on your progress.
i believe i am making progress too with hip/back/buttock/pelvic (etc) pain thanks to dr. sarno's teachings. it is becoming more intermittent and manageable and i do my best to read up whenever i can.

re the hip, that's a problem for me too. while i believe heat is better in most times, sometimes i will take a large cool ice pack (not cold, mind you - so one that has sort of defrosted overnight or ... well, you can figure something out) and lie on it. a little coolness with be just cool enough for you to sleep... or lie there and do some valuable processing! i save this trick for "emergencies" but it really helps when i need the sleep and i need to lie on a cooperative hip.

Hi:

I too have pain and am getting better using the same things you are to get well.

The sleep thing could be your mind "stuck" on an issue. Dreams can tell us exactly what we're feeling. Are you dreaming when you wake up? Could you write out your dream instead of walking around? If so, this might be where you are hung up and not able to make the final push. It also would break the habit of getting up and walking around, waking yourself more.

When we write out our dreams, exactly as they happen and then re-read them, often we can see exactly what the problem is. Maybe you're dreaming the same issue with a different setting. But doing a journal post if you remember your dreams I think would help you a lot.

I'm experiencing all kinds of reactions. It takes time and you are lucky enough to get through this fast. But I'd say you have some issues yet to be discovered or accepted and that's why you're waking in the night.

If you DO have pain, you might try a heating pad for awhile to get blood flow to the area. Works for me and I sleep pretty well. Good luck.
