Here are a couple of TMS'ers that overcame "IC". |

Thank you so much for the encouraging response. It sounds like you have been through a lot too, but are on the right path to recovery. I do hope you make a complete recovery soon.
I just wish there were more success stories about IC. There seem to be so many for back pain. I will check if there is a TMS doctor in my area. Hoping to make some progress here!!!
Take care :) |

I have never heard of him. But reading all the amazon info and reviews, it looks like this book was written just for me and I ordered it. I can't wait to get it. I it wasn't so close to Christmas time, I probably won't get it until after. |

I am a patient of Dr. Sarno and believe he sticks with the musculo skeletal stuff because that is his specialty. Basd on my experience, ANYTHING can be a TMS equivilant. And remember Dr. Sarno is only one of many docs out there, writing and treating this stuff. Have you read "They can't Find Anything Wrong" by Dr David Clarke?

Posted - 12/17/2011 : 12:49:38 You know, I do wish that Dr Sarno would include more than just mainly back pain in his books. I'm not sure why he concentrates mostly on it? TMS symptoms such as GI issues especially, are just as much of an epidemic as back pain. Obviously, there are a lot more symptoms such as IC that I wish could have had more "air time" in his books. |

Posted - 12/17/2011 : 12:36:51 Jerserygal, like I did, I know you're feeling damaged and hopeless from all the pain, catheters, pills etc. But I promise you, that you can be rid of this misery. I don't think, I know.
I've been through every gynecological nightmare you can imagine. I'm just 3 months out of having a near 8lb basketball sized fibroid tumor + total hysterectomy. The fibroid tumor was outside the uterus and my uterus was perfectly healthy and normal. The pain in my pelvic area and severe incontinence, I believed would be cured once I got the tumor out. Being childless, I had to think long and hard about whether or not I wanted to keep my uterus and cervix. But the fear of every getting another fibroid and going through the pain again, was enough for me to sacrifice my uterus and ever having children.
So, now the tumor is gone and you know what? The pain and incontinence was not even 1% better. That was shocking and devastating. I thought, I sacrificed so much due to fear of pain. Now I'll never have children and I'm still in debilitating pain. So much so, I never left the house for 2 years except for doctor appointments.
And you know what the really wild and totally insane part about all this? I never really had pain, just pressure all the years I carried that around in me. Until, one day a doctor told me that I needed that out pronto as it was dangerous and could cause pain. Once I heard that, WHAMO! my life turned upside down and became a living hell.
Getting the tumor out without any resolution of any problems did though convince me it was obviously TMS and nocebo effect. I paid a high price not giving consideration that the pain I was experiencing was TMS and the nocebo effect.
Well, I'm not making that mistake again. I'm putting my TMS tools to work, and I'm getting better everyday. My pain has decreased in my pelvic area about 60%. I still do struggle with gastritis because I'm weaning off some pretty wicked medication like oxycontin, baclofen and neurontin. All of those cause anxiety when tapering.
I absolutely expect to make a full recovery, unfortunately minus a couple of body parts lol. My last real struggle is the gastritis. I don't expect to make a full recovery until I can completely cut ties with the hospital that has caused me so much misery. Until I am completely weaned off my medication, I still have to go to doctor appointments. This is a huge trigger for my TMS symptoms. The longer the time span between appointments, the less my pain is. Once I am made an appointment, I relapse, especially with the gastritis pain.
I'm telling you all this because I know what it feels like to go to medical extremes and feel so damaged beyond repair. But I also know the flipside of having one of the most amazing tools thanks to Dr Sarno, to heal myself. Also, the people here and at TMS wiki are amazingly therapeutic. Their stories are amazing and their desire and willingness to help people like you and I who are still struggling is a huge help.
I do think though, that if you can see a TMS doctor, that would help you tremendously. Perhaps there is something in your past or currently that is going on that you may not be able to handle. Or at least your mind thinks you can't so is trying to protect you and just causing you pain as a diversion. A TMS doctor can help you figure it out whilst helping you put your TMS tools to use. So yeah, definitely, if you can see a TMS doctor, that would invaluable.
Just remember and truly believe, there is nothing wrong with you. IC is a TMS symptom. Nothing more and a lot of people have overcome "IC" using Sarno's methods. You WILL be 100% cured of the symptom if you really work at it, without a doubt.
I really hope this is of some encouragement to you. Sorry it is so long. And really, this isn't even the half of it lol! |

Posted - 12/17/2011 : 11:16:23 TaylorJoh, thank you so much for responding!!
I have been diagnosed with IC for over 2 years now. I have seen 6 urologists/urogyns and tried the medical route, various pills, bladder instillations with a catheter :( physical therapy etc, but nothing has helped. Also tried the IC diet which didn't help at all. I don't have urgency/frequency - just pain. And the pain is horrible - cramping, burning and the feeling of needing to go all the time.
Do you think this could be helped by using the Sarno technique? Would I have to see a TMS doctor? I have read Sarno's books but they talk mainly about back pain which I do not have. IC pain is just so different :(

Posted - 12/17/2011 : 10:37:10 After my first surgery, which was probably the most stressful, anxiety ridden time of my life, I had it for two months. I first blamed it on a UTI, but was tested for infection, no infection. I then attributed it to the baby wipes I had been using (hypo allergenic) even after I stopped that, there was no improvement. Then I blamed it on toilet paper, laundry detergent, soap etc. Went hypo-allergenic on everything. Didn't help. Then I was convinced that somehow my urethra had been damaged from the catheter lol. And oh boy was that traumatic, which only worsened the TMS symptom that's called "IC". But remember, it's only TMS, a psychosomatic symptom and not a real medical condition.
My symptoms were constantly feeling as if I had a bladder infection. I swear, the feeling of needing to pee constantly almost drove me mad. Feeling like I had a full bladder then when going it was dribble, dribble, dribble. Burning and cramping. Just awful.
My mind was trying everything to make sure I didn't even think it could be TMS. Once I came to the conclusion it was TMS, it went away in just a few days!!
I can't believe the havoc that stress, fear and anxiety can have on a bladder. I've been through hell and back with this one When I'm under stress or anxiety I can go up to about 15 times a day. Literally, from my room to the bathroom which is only about 20 feet, I have two garbage pails lined up because I just can't make it at times. I would have "accidents" quite often, to the point my girls (dogs) started urinating in the house because the scent was there, no matter how much I cleaned.
The TMS symptom of burning and cramping has never come back. But I'm still struggling with urgency and frequency. It's getting a helluva lot better the more I get control of my stress/anxiety and convinced it's all just TMS.
If you've been checked out by a doctor and they diagnosed you with IC, there really isn't anything wrong with you. It's just TMS, not a real and scary medical condition.
Put your TMS tools to good use and I promise you, you're TMS symptom will be gone. I can't promise it will be gone as quickly as mine, but it really will go away. It went away for me and I struggled and suffered with it for 2 months. I felt very damaged "down there" and I was as good as new in a few days just being convinced it was TMS.
Man, I forgot about that TMS symptom. Dang, I've had a lot of them. What a mess!

Posted - 12/13/2011 : 17:00:28 I haven't had it, but the TMS Wiki's page on Interstitial Cystitus lists four stories you might want to read for inspiration.
Hope this helps!
