This is my first post and I am desperate to find a 'sciatica' support group, I have had it now for 3 years, it is relentless pain down left leg and pins and needles in both feet, have had MRI, CT Scan, EMG nerve tests, massage, nerve medicine the lot and no relief, I can sleep at night, and it probably is TMS I have read all Dr. Sarno, and Dr. Schubiner, but none seem to help. All and any help much appreciated. P.S. I live in France so no TMS help here!! - Ophelia

Bonjour Ophelia,

I've been having sciatica in my left leg for almost two years. I managed to get rid of it a few weeks after reading Sarno's books and writing to some very nice people on this forum who really helped me(that was a few months ago). Sometimes, it comes back, but I've made some progress in managing it and the pain doesn't last too long.

By the way, I'm french (but live in Morocco since a few months...) so don't hesitate to send me an email in french if you want.

I'm not a TMS expert at all, but maybe I can tell you what worked for me as it may work for you too.

Very much appreciated art and eautmb you both sound very evolved, careing people who know what they are talking about, I agree with your diagnosis! Ophelia

OPhelia...

Lot's of cross currents in your posts. Bottom line in my opinion...and this is very common...your fear is holding you back. It's a process, for some longer and more arduous than for others. Simply reading the books over and over again at a certain point becomes a waste of time.

The forum is a great resource, not just to get your questions addressed, but to read about others. If you hang around for a while,
you'll see many versions of your own situation.

acceptance of tms = elimination of fear = elimination of pain

Apologies for not being clearer, my Mum's chemo was stopped definitively because she got periperhal neuropathy' in her legs, feet and hands, and now uses crutches to get around, this causes numbness and lack of feeling.. I am scared because although the EMG was essentially normal it said I had the beginnings of peripheral neuropathy, the conclusion of which another nerve doctor disagreed with and my own MD said as the numbness didn't bother me at night and I could sleep it can't be that - Dr. Sarno also says and I quote 'EMG abnormalities are often cited as evedence of nerve damage due to structural compression, but in fact EMG changes are very common in TMS and usually reveal involvment of many mre nerves than could be explained by a structural abnormality' So if I understand all this andaccept the obviously my link with my Mum, WHY can't I get rid of it??!! Oh it is frustrating beyond belief, despite this I am very optimistic, excercise every day and go around with a big grin on my face!! So much appreciation again for your concern. Ophelia

Ophelia, you appear to say a great deal in just a few sentences. Correct me if I wrong but you say your mother was having chemo but had to stop due to the side effects it was causing. How long ago was this and what happened after she stopped the chemo? Currently you have been suffering from sciatica which includes numbness in both feet. I can empathise with the pain of sciatica having suffered several bouts myself in recent years but I managed to see it off each time. When you say the "numbness...is the most frightening" what is the fear? That there is something seriously wrong? That you will never recover from this and it will cause permanent damage? That this is somehow tied up with what happened to your mother? If you have had all the tests and nothing appears to be wrong, then there is nothing wrong...physically. Perhaps it is your fear that is preventing you from recovering from this affliction. Reading the books hasn't worked. So stop reading the TMS type books. Do something else to rid yourself of your fear.

Very many thanks for all your suggestions - it is the numbness in the feet that is the most frightening, my mother had to stop chemotherapy because she developed 'peripheral neuropathy' ie numbness in hands and feet, and I just can't believe that the two are linked....but TMS wise it makes sense. I just seem to read and re read these books to no avail.

That's true eautmb. Reading the book (s) are enough for some. I'd say the critical factor is how convinced the reader is. I read HBP after a friend loaned it to me, and my back problems resolved about half way through, basically forever. I was sure Sarno was correct. And that was enough to effect a cure.

Sarno says that some people got better by just reading his books but I guess for a lot of people it doesn't happen that way. Often you have to put in the work. But the first step is accepting it is TMS. You don't seem too sure when you say it's "probably" TMS.

Something that worked for me initially was to look at my emotions without fear, accepting my feelings as horrible as some of them might have been and forgiving myself for not being perfect. This is not something that I did once and it just "fixed" me, I need to work now and then on myself depending on the amount of stress I have on my life.

No sciatica support group (which imho you don't need), but the biggest TMS support group in the world. How lucky is that :-)

Your tests are all negative and you're suspecting that that your real problem is TMS. So you're more than halfway home.

The books are great, but they have no magic powers. It's up to you to put what you've learned into practice. Generally speaking, the more persuaded you feel that your pain is psychosomatic, the sooner your pain goes away.

What do you think is holding you back?
