I'm currently having a distressing episode (a couple of weeks so far) of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). Has anyone else had success with this particular form of relux by treating it as TMS? I was so freaked out at first that I focused on the physical side of it but have now realised that it may be related to the extra stress I have been under with the big earthquakes we have had here in Christchurch New Zealand and the thousands of aftershocks we have had (on top of my easily-stressed and irritated personality type).

Any help would be appreciated. I thank eautmb for his/her help on the thread entitled "How do I break the TMS cycle?", even though our digestive issues are slightly different.

Thanks Art and eautmb. I have that book. I must re-read it...

I agree with art. Usually as soon as I stop worrying about a symptom it goes away, or gets better.

Developing mindfulness is something that could help you stop worrying. Have a look at The Happiness Trap by Russ Harris.

I've had good success treating heartburn/acid problems as TMS. It took a few weeks, but after I was able to make the connection to stress I stopped worrying about it and that did the trick. I still get it occasionally, but now it's no big deal...

Key, as usual, is to stop worrying...

Hi eautmb, my doctor does think that I have reflux but she didn't seem in a hurry to get me to see a gastroenterologist. She said that stress can increase acid production and we decided that I would do things to relax and see if that helped. I felt more confident after talking about it with her. But then later that day as the symptoms got worse (they get worse with each meal) I started worrying about it all again.

Have you been diagnosed by a doctor as having LPR? I often have looked up something in google, self diagnosed, but then I go to the doctor and the doctor 's diagnosis has never been even close to my own. So I spent a long time worrying I had something I didn't have.

I had what I thought was GERD a couple of years ago. I didn't taste the acid but had indigestion and mucous. I put the GERD down to gluten intolerance (stopping gluten had fixed my GI problems in the past, at least temporarily). I stopped having gluten and it went away. Placebo effect for sure.

I remember reading an article about increases in illness after natural disasters. It's only natural we are traumatised by life threatening events like that.

Thanks for your reply Tom. Earthquakes are no fun that's for sure!

Doctor wanted me to take a PPI (that's a drug that inhibits acid production). I tried it for 3-4 days and it made no difference. Apparently LPR is different to normal reflux and people need to take higher dosages of the PPIs and even then it doesn't work for everyone.

But I don't want to take drugs since it's not so much the amount of acid being the problem but the fact that the valve that lets it get back up the throat is staying open instead of shutting as it should to contain the acid in the stomach. I think that it is something my mind could be telling my body to do to get my attention about changing my life to be less stressed and anxious and impatient. I have actually booked an appointment with therapist to address my emotional issues so that's a good step forward but I just wanted to see if I could read any more success stories to strenghten my resolve to "think psychological".

Am currently using slippery elm powder and licorace extract which really help with the symptoms (e.g. I can sleep through most of the night now which is a relief) but when I don't take them regularly the symptoms are very distressing. They have really got my attention!

Definitely could be TMS. I recall, after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake out here in frisco, I couldn't get off the Golden Gate Bridge fast enough during my daily commute. It took me several years to stop worrying about the bridge collapsing, with me on it. I now enjoy the ride and the beautiful scenery once again. It will take some time. What meds are you taking?
