So, this always amazes me...

I was reading an article on an NFL game... and through many degrees of separation, I began thinking of an old friend from about 20 years ago.
But, couldn't remember the name. (Wasn't a close friend.) I don't have the greatest memory, but I can't really use age as an excuse yet at 43. :)

Started to get frustrated because I couldn't remember, so I just said screw it. I've learned that when I get to the point of frustration trying to remember a detail... I likely won't. So, I went back to reading about my team... and a bunch of fairly mundane game-stats.

About 6-7 minutes later... the friend's name just blasted into my brain, almost forcefully if to say... HERE, HERE is your stupid answer. lol! My conscious mind was 100% off the subject. I was done with it and if I never remembered, oh well. But, my subconscious mind interrupted what I was working on to give me the answer.

Now, this is obviously not unique to me. We all get some form of this, I'm sure. But, I never really thought of it in the context of what was really happening... and just how much was really going on beneath the surface, completely without my awareness. We can be told that 90% of our brains operate in the subconscious, but I don't think we really buy it until moments like that.

And moments like that make me wonder how people can doubt the role of the subconscious mind in TMS. If my brain was working overtime to dig up some useless name of a friend from 20 years ago... what on earth is it getting up to on a normal basis?

I think our brains can be very selective about the memories that stay with us. I can remember the most random, inconsequential details, for instance the name of the pilot who flew the plane I was on over 30 years ago. I just don't need to know that anymore, not that I did then I also remember upsetting, negative or traumatic events a bit too vividly. It's a shame I can't erase my hard drive once in a while. I think I would be a lot happier.

I'm not sure if this have anything to do with subconcious mind. Wait until you're over 50 Bryan. Now a day I spent most of my time going around the house looking for my key while it is right inside my jeans' pocket. And I always have to come up with excuse for why I forgot anniversary, bithday...

I think we are like an old computer with an old hard drive. It take a while to recall some informations from the harddrive. Sometime it don't even work.

I saw on TV the other day a documentary about people who can't forget. Some lady remember everything that happen everyday of her life. President Clinton was one with a phographic memory, he can remember thing he saw just one time for a super long time. And then there are people who can not remember anything like alzheimer patients. Or people who can not match a face with a name. They are normal in everyway but they just can't recognize a face even if they have seen that face hundred of times.

Somewhere in our brain there is a place that store memories, just like a pc hard drive. Sometime it just don't work the way it was design to work.

Good points guys, well written Bryan, the theme song for TMS should be: "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life!".
