Posted - 09/13/2011 : 10:15:41 After reading "The Divided Mind," I realized that TMS must be the issue for my problems.
As far as I can recall, this started likely during my senior year in high school. I had a few small pimples here and there, but during the senior year, it started to flared more. Eventually, in college, it flared horribly. Antibiotics worked sort of, but never stopped it.
Moving along, my senior year in college, I had a job that I thought was great. I could work from home. It was great until my manager did not contact me for several months and pay stopped coming through. When my senior year started, all of sudden he wanted my work from the summer. Safe to say this stressed me out. My blood pressure rose, acne came back worst, and now, I started to show signs of IBS.
Graduated from college. IBS disappeared for a bit only to come back when I started a new job. I decided to take up yoga to see if it would calm my nerves. It worked for a while, acne went down, IBS seemed to go down as well. Blood pressure was under control and I was able to get off the medicine I was taking for it. After a year of practice, I stopped. I had no issues for a while until recently.
I bought a house this February. After living with my parents through college, I was able to save up enough money to do so. This past May, I started getting sick again severely. I thought digestive enzymes would help. So, I used those. And for quite a while, my IBS was gone again. Then I caught the flu. I thought, what am I doing wrong, how can this be happening to me. I thought it was all IBS or something else more severe. In the morning, I was having nausea and bad indigestion, so much so, it was making it difficult to eat. In the process of worrying I lost about 10lbs over June and July.
I had multiple tests run to see if it was a parasite or something else insidious. I did a barium follow through. No problems found. No GERD, no ulcers, everything was fine. It was labeled as a functional disorder.
I finally decided that this was all being generated in my mind. After the first session with my therapist, all symptoms disappeared. Of course, they reappeared again, but I found this to be the confirmation I needed. I then stumbled across Sarno's work. After reading the personality traits, I cried. It was me. So, now with the help of my therapist I am looking forward to calming my TMS and moving on with my life.
I have isolated myself due to all of these issues. I wanted to have everything perfect before I could even think about having a significant other. With the help from Sarno and my therapist, I am starting to shed this need. I have even asked a girl out in hopes to make a friend or something more.
I have been able to control the indigestion I have been experiencing, but the other symptoms of IBS seemed to have ramped up. I assume this is because I am now willing to deal with my emotions. |

Posted - 09/14/2011 : 10:49:47 I should note that this morning I signed up for Dr. Schubiner's program. Along with the therapist, I think this should help things along. I'm already finding some of his information very useful. I have been able to calm down the IBS a bit. The indigestion is slowly sneaking back in though. Very tricky. |

Posted - 09/13/2011 : 17:41:34 Hi Ryan,
I went through a similar goose-chase with my gastritis and lower GI problems this year. Came to find out later that most of it was part of Xanax withdrawal. I still have stomach issues from time to time, though.
I agree that the MB-connection is strong in those of us with stomach issues, and it may take more than just relaxation to fix it.
I'm a TMS rookie, but I do know that symptoms can ramp up and move around as you get closer to dealing with the real issue.
It's simply amazing how our minds/bodies work. It really is hard to wrap my head around.
Good luck, keep us updated on your journey.
