Posted - 09/06/2011 : 02:58:12 Hi, I'm new to the forum, and have read Healing Back Pain. So hello.
My symptoms are some neck pain and stiffness, and some right shoulder and upper back pain. Also some hip pain. Both seem to move around a lot. I'm a 44 yr old male.
I have long a history of psychosomatic illness, and have the tender points Sarno talks of.
The thing is the pain isn't particularly profound, the stiffmess is a little worse, but it is the crepitus (neck noises) that i find alarming. Scraping, creaking, popping that seemed to just start one day. My doctor says nothing about it. I fear it may be an enormous and constant nocebo, telling me I should be in pain.
I wondered what is the TMS take on crepitus?

Posted - 09/06/2011 : 08:30:15 I sometimes cracked my neck on purpose to release stress. Similar to cracking your nuckles. Your neck sometimes does make noise when you move your head but maybe you wasn't paying attention to it before. Under tms, we tend to pay attention at every little sensation our body has. Tiny itch would drive us crazy. The light is too bright or the temperature is too low, too high... we notice things like that more when we're under tms spell. Our tolerance to pain, to changes in our body is much lower than normal. In the East there is an old saying: "a paper cut to a rich man is comparable to spilling guts to a pauper". Tms turn people into rich men. We see every little changes in our life, our body and we tend to give them more emphasis than they deserve. Your anxiety is trying to make you focus more on your body now so you can forget whatever emotional issue you're having. Thanks your anxiety, accept it and do not fear it then slowly it will leave you. It only come when you're under stress, it only want to help. Take control of your life and tell it you can handle it without help, you will be ok, you won't stress out anymore. It will take sometime but you will be OK. |

Posted - 09/06/2011 : 06:30:18 thanks for the reply, i mentioned the noises to doctor, but the doctor said nothing. i hope that means it is not significant. the internet seems to say crepitus is one of several things, one of which is "nobody knows"
and yes, i am a mass of worry and health anxieties. and only recently so. so am inexperienced with dealing with such anxiety |

Posted - 09/06/2011 : 06:08:24 The TMS take on such symptoms is that they're usually TMS. Or perhaps a real, but benign condition. It seems your doctor has ruled out anything serious. If you haven't come out and asked him about it, then do so and when he tells you to stop worrying, STOP WORRYING.
You've got to get your health anxiety under control or you'll be fighting this stuff forever. |
