Excerpt of interest from an interview with Daniel Liberman, a professor of evolutionary biology at Harvard:

Q. People with bad backs often blame evolution for their pain. They say, “My back aches because man was not meant to walk on two feet.” Are they right?

A. If that were true, natural selection would have its toll and we’d be extinct. What is more likely is that many people sit in chairs all day, get no exercise, and thus have weak backs. We did not evolve to sit in chairs all day.

Ha ha, so THAT's who you are, Art. (I'm always wondering) ;-)

I'm assuming from the thread title that some of you have read Born To Run, which I advertised on the forum when it first came out, even though I'm not a runner. It's a very good book for folks like us to read, because it pretty much proves that we are not the delicate weaklings we're pretending to be.

Love is the answer, whatever the question

It sounds like a reasonable hypothesis. UNarguably, human beings and their two legged antecedents ran for millions of years without benefit of Nike running shoes...

Sure as hell though, as soon as I try it I'll hurt myself. It's just who I am. :>)

Lieberman also did the studies last year that appeared in Nature Magazine that showed barefoot running has less impact than even the best running shoes.

This is an interesting discussion for a TMS forum. Dr. Sarno himself says that nothing could be more benign for your back than sitting. That is the whole point of TMS. It starts in the brain, and your brain is trying to make you think that something structural caused the back problems. Nothing structural, including sitting or walking caused any problems. It all starts in the unconscious.

Has the 'not meant to walk on two feet' thing ever been seriously argued? Anyone who believes it would either have to reject the theory of evolution or be ignorant of even its most basic elements. Sitting is far more strenuous on the back than walking. Move it or lose it, as they say.
