Posted - 08/10/2011 : 20:42:17 I am new to the forum and would love some of your thoughts on how to proceed!
I have had 2 of Dr. Sarno's books (MBP & TDM) for quite a while now but have only recently started to do the psychological work in earnest. I have had a few aha moments while journaling, which have been great, but I'm having a hard time getting past the fear that this won't work for me.
I think it would be easier if I could get an actual diagnosis of TMS from a doctor who understands and works with TMS patients but there aren't any in my local area and traveling is not practical for me right now.
I know that many of you have not had the formal diagnosis from a TMS doctor and have been able to successfully eliminate your pain. I absolutely have the TMS personality, and have overcome some TMS equivalents in the past (before knowing about Dr. Sarno and TMS).
Have any of you dealt with the fear of not succeeding? I think this is why it has taken me so long to get around to committing to doing the work.
I would appreciate any help to tame the fear beast!
Thank you! |

Posted - 08/15/2011 : 12:58:45 Ria, I'll probably write more later but I just wanted to let you know that in terms of getting a professional opinion, Dr. Marc Sopher is available to do phone consultations. I personally prefer to see someone in person and got evaluated and diagnosed by Dr. Martinez in Boston, but prior to him, I spoke with Dr. Sopher via email and he offered a phone consultation if I wanted one. Here's his website: http://www.themindbodysyndrome.com/

Posted - 08/11/2011 : 01:02:10 The thing is, if you do the work - especially the psychological work - it won't harm you whether it "works" or not. So in a year you will either have dealt with a lot more of your emotional issues, or you won't. Perhaps this will bring you dramatic or partial relief from physical stuff too. But even if it doesn't, you will be better off.
I personally haven't found that I have to completely swear off all other supportive health approaches. I just have to swear off my obsession with my health, and take that energy and turn the attention on what I'm actually feeling/believing.
Good luck. I'd say, give it a whirl.
Love is the answer, whatever the question |

Ria, fear has been a huge issue for me as well, so you're not alone.
I think one big element of fear relates to how long you've been dealing with the pain. It is harder to reverse your thinking the longer you have had chronic pain.
I've been dealing with different incarnations of pain for anywhere from 2-15 years. So it's a long time of hearing that there are structural issues. And, at least for me, that cannot be undone quickly. Even when I have the TMS personality. Even when all tests have been negative for severe pain. So even when the evidence definitely shows TMS, my mind has been slow to accept it.
I am seeing a TMS therapist who is great, and she says fear is usually the #1 issue for people to get over. And she also said that in her experience most people do not get over this in a matter of weeks like the books indicate. She said it typically takes many months for all of this to stick.
Despite intermittent episodes of fear, I have definitely seen enough improvement to see TMS working. I am not yet where I want to be, but I have weaned myself off medz, gotten rid of shoe orthotics... it works. Try to stick with it and make a point to practice TMS thinking every day.
The more I saturate my brain with Sarno's books (and Scott Brady's and Fred Amir's) the more it sinks in. I need to read meaningful passages every day for this stuff to really stick because I sometimes get those sneaky feelings of fear coming in too (especially during exercise).
Hope that helps!
