Posted - 07/08/2011 : 09:38:24 Hi This is my first post. I have read Sarno's first and last books, and I am very happy to have found this forum. I recently had an MRI (due to extreme low back pain and first time sciatica) which said this "1. Large left paracentral disc protrusion at the L5-S1 level with inferior migration posterior to the body of S1 and impingement on the lest S1 root in the lateral recess and left exit foramen. 2. Small disc bulge with degenerative endplate changes at the L4-L5 level. Everything else is unremarkable or within normal limits/normal. The osteopath who is chief of pain management at the hospital feels that I may need surgery. I feel tingling and numbness in my foot and leg. Sitting upright can be uncomfortable. Since my hospital discharge, I have been taking it easy. I can lie down when I want. Seven days after the pain exceeded what I could tolerate ( and ER/hospital admission) I was taken off narcotics and Predinisone (steroids) and switched to Neurontin for tingling and numbness and an anti-inflammatory. (no steroid injection) I get the psychological aspect and can identify specific stressors brought me to this place, but since the disc is extruding, and there is something structural going on, is surgery more likely? I would appreciate your thoughts and recommendations. I am in NYC and want 2nd and 3rd opinions. I am really scared to feel that excruciating pain again, and I am very cautious with my movements. Thank you very much. Deborah

True, but that doesn't mean they should degenerate if used properly. I read an interesting study about the Bhils tribes people of Southern India. The level of disc compression in 50-year-olds was below 10%, almost level with that of the 20-year-olds. Compare that with Western sedentary workers (over 30%) and industrial and forest workers (over 60%) and you have to believe we're doing something wrong.
Nevertheless, I agree with everyone else that you should completely exhaust all other options before committing to surgery. It carries such a high risk and yet promises so little. Good luck with your recovery. |

Posted - 07/17/2011 : 23:04:17 Andrew Weil's book, Spontaneous Healing, has a chapter on TMS ("The Faces of Healing: Ethan"). There is nothing new here--it's just another case history--but it may resonate more because it comes from a third-party doctor whose patient eventually decided to see Sarno. You might be interested in the case because this patient had two herniated disks (one of them shattered into multiple fragments) and was told by several doctors that he HAD to have surgery, and pronto. Yet he recovered completely after seeing Sarno, with no surgery. Worth thinking about, anyway. |

Posted - 07/09/2011 : 08:10:43 I had exactly what you're having. 3 doctors wanted to operate on my back. The pain and the numbness in my back and my entire left leg is so bad I thought I would become paralyze. My family doc told me 15 years ago I will do more damage to my body if I don't get surgery....
I read books from doctor Sarno and a few others and now I'm being able to do anything a normal person can do. Run, walk, lift, carry... and happy.
Wishing you the same outcome, except earlier, not years of suffering like I did. |

Posted - 07/08/2011 : 15:53:40 Thank you very much for your replies. I have the Healing Back Pain book and will read it slowly. I'm sure it will bring up stuff. I read a review of The Divided Mind and that resonated with me, so I'll buy that one. I would like to see Dr Sarno. I thought he no longer practiced bc his own website says nothing about appointments, and I couldn't find him on the nyu website. I do plan to avoid surgery, and will start reading. I appreciate your thoughtful replies. Best regards, Deborah Thank you

You are very fortunate to have access to the Good Doctor himself. He only accepts patients from the Tri-States area. If it were me, I'd make an appointment with him, or one of his associates, at NYU Rusk Rehab in a New York minute. BTW, do New York minutes exist in NY?
Good Luck, and as Dave said, read your Sarno especially about failed back surgery. There's a TMS phenomenon that the gremlin blinds us to the info in the books that most directly applies to us. Read slowly and thoughtfully, speed reading doesn't work for TMS.
