Hello TMS friends,

I have not been on this site for a very long time. I pretty much was able to ban most of my big TMS pain sx a few years ago with the help of the forum and also with a very practical "behavioral" approach (Fred Amir's book was good.) My keyed up thoughts/emotions were causing pain.

But although I thought I had licked it, this devil will sneak in at any opportunity. A few years ago I had plastic surgery which was a reward for losing a lot of weight. The only reason I was brave enough to do the surgery was because I no longer had TMS symptoms of any kind. But I think the TMS "piggy backed" onto the surgery. After the surgery (kind of an extended tummy tuck) I found my torso unbearably "tight" to the point where I felt I could not stand it any more. I sought help through painful massage, cranial-sacral therapy, hypnosis, and god knows what else. I even had trigger point shots to try to break up "scar tissue." I thought the scar tissue was the problem.
Now mind you, no one else on any of the ps forums described this as a big problem at all. Two friends I had who had it done described the tightness as no big deal and didn't notice it. They noticed a little tightness or a small change in sensation but nothing like I had.

Recently I became suspicious after the trigger point shots caused "unbearable pain" in my back for months---I became as obsessive about this as I did the surgery "tightness"-- and I started to try to move this pain to another part of my body to see if it was TMS. I was shocked that I could move it. The fact that I could meant that it had to be TMS and not the pain from the shots. When I moved it I no longer felt that awful post surgery tightness either.

Two birds with one stone. I was thrilled...BUT

Now I am stuck. I can move the pain around but it won't LEAVE my body. It bounces around and burns and I have this annoying fullness in my face. The fullness in my face drives me crazy. This pressure in face must be TMS but this is a new one to me.

Fred's book no longer helping. Now I am getting obsessive about the face thing and the bouncing pain. I think I scared myself! This thing is truly diabolical.

Any ideas???

Thanks as always,

Jane

This is very insightful.

Clearly you understand TMS, but these latest symptoms are shaking your faith. The more you focus on them, the more they will stay. Obsession breeds fear; fear feeds TMS. It is a vicious cycle that needs to be broken.

All you can do is follow the treatment diligently and try very hard to figure out what might be affecting you psychologically that you are not fully facing up to. Try to think about things that have changed in your life recently, and how they may be angering "the child inside you" without you realizing it on a conscious level.

Hiya,

the fact that you can move your pain around should give you some real confidence that you have TMS. It always is a little depressing when TMS creeps back into our lives but as you have recovered before you already know the tools and techniques that will help you get better. You said you read Fred Amir's book to help you last time. How bout reading another book like one of Sarnos or Schubiners? For me I always find it helpful to sort of re-educate myself about TMS whenever a little relapse occurs.

One more thing, it sounds like you are starting to obsess over your symptoms. I know it can be really hard not to do this, but remember that fearing your symptoms will only prevent you from recovering. Try to think psychologically as best you can, and read through Sarno's daily reminders. They really help in affirming there is nothing structurally wrong.

Jane, this is a bit late but I was just searching for "scar tissue" postings and found yours. My wife believes scar tissue to be the reason for her pain (she had neck fusion surgery after a car accident). The way it moves around, I know it isn't scar tissue. But, she hasn't accepted TMS theory yet even though it has helped me greatly. I guess it is very easy to think someone else has "mental" issues as long as it isn't you. Anyway, I don't have scar tissue myself but I do experience the pain moving around. It is very annoying. I keep telling myself everything I know about TMS and I know I will get there eventually.
