Posted - 03/12/2011 : 22:48:31 You started your tms journey? I think we can all remember how it felt when we'd first read sarnos books, that feeling of hope but also that thought of "ok what now? " suddenly know more treatments, no more relying on others to fix you... so as someone who's still struggling what's the one thing that helped you the most, what was your key to cracking it.... was it something you read? Something you heard? What kept you going?

They're filled with people in their 30's,40's, and 50's. People in the prime of life.
It made sense. Something just clicked.

Same as heelsdown - it made sense. As soon as you start to look for psychological connections to your pain and find them - how the pain changes dependent on the time of day (why is that?) or the time of year (why is that?) or dependent on how stressed you were (why is that?) that's it you've got all the proof you need. You just need to accept that proof completely - so you need to gather enough evidence to convince yourself it's true. That evidence can be entirely personal, it can be other people's success stories, it can be the medical evidence on the subject, it can be from reading and re-reading TMS books. But whatever you do, don't start doubting that it's not true - because as soon as you do, then that's the crack that will allow the pain to take control again.
This is what worked for me - I read and re-read Sarno's books everyday. I did exercise everyday. I journalled everyday. I meditated everyday. I printed off my favourite success stories and re-read them everyday. I set myself targets and reviewed them every week. I set rewards for meeting those targets.
For me it was the everyday bit that was important - it's like being in a boxing match when you've got your opponent on the ropes, don't let up for one second, don't give your subconscious a chance to start dominating again. The first time i went swimming i got pretty bad late-onset throbbing pain in both elbows - like i was expecting because it had happened months before when i had last gone swimming. It wasn't as severe but nevertheless it was still significant. But that wasn't evidence that the TMS wasn't real - just that i didn't fully believe in it yet (after all i was expecting the pain!) I tried to address this and went swimming again the next day - and no pain. I then made sure i went every day after that - because i knew even a short let up would allow my doubts to return. I needed to have rolling evidence that i was OK (eg. I went swimming yesterday so i must be fine...)
Hope this helps.... |

Posted - 03/12/2011 : 23:50:34 For me, it was the only thing that made sense. And that is how I knew it was tms... even though I kept having doubts, b/c that's my personality. I always came back to the fact that tms made sense when nothing else did.
I remember first discovering tms on the internet back in september. And getting so excited b/c it made sense. And then reading healing back pain. And crying at points b/c I knew this finally explained my pain. And I was going to get better. And not have to live with pain the rest of my life. It was an amazing feeling. |
