Posted - 03/04/2011 : 10:38:39 I seemed to have developed out-of-nowhere, very sharp tailbone pain after having already battled and almost completely beaten a variety of other TMS problems that have been bothering me for 10 years.
My Dr. told me that he heard that tailbone pain and throat pain were the last spots that people have pain when they are just about to fully get rid of TMS (which I thought was fascinating).
Ive also been having some sciatica problems, which I know is a TMS darling. |

Thanks for those links. Dr. Rashbaum does take insurance but he doesn't do therapy. He will see someone to diagnose them. The therapists on the list don't take my insurance but I will keep searching.
Susan-
The top TMS therapists cost a fortune. You may want to look into people who practice "somatic experiencing". Its essentially the same thing as TMS, and these people tend to be more affordable. I am seeing a fabulous therapist who at first I was concerned wouldnt accept/understand my TMS but it turned out, she and I shared exactly the same views, yet called them different things. Unfortunately she is not taking any more people at this time. |

Thanks for those names, Forest. None of them are on my insurance website but I wrote to them to see what happens.
Glad to help, Susan! I presume that you are referring to the "Who's Who" list that I mentioned above. If you're looking for a doctor or therapist, you might want to check out the Wiki's Find a TMS Doctor or Therapist list. It's the most complete one out there by far (about 60% larger than the second largest, last time I checked) and has much more info about each practitioner than the others. I added a link to it to my signature (below) in case others have difficulty finding it.

Posted - 03/05/2011 : 11:29:41 There was a great thread at the TMS Wiki's forum about tailbone pain that played out throughout all of February entitled Trying to escape surgery that you might want to check out. Spoiler: she escaped surgery!
Regarding Dr. Rashbaum, in addition to writing a chapter in The Divided Mind, he coauthored an research article with Dr. Sarno about TMS in 2003. You can read about it in Dr. Rashbaum's Bio in Who's Who in TMS/PPD.

I heard it from my physical therapist Scott Weiss, who has some tremendous experience in his field (hes a PHD and is on The US Olympic Committee) but not necessarily a TMS practioner. That said, he integrates all sorts of modalities and theories into his therapy and he's a big fan of Sarno. Ill try and find out where specifically he heard this from, but he said that its very symbolic; essentially the pain is "leaving" through a major orifice. Sounds a little silly, but ive learned there is nothing thats too silly or strange for TMS.
I will revert back with some more defintive info.
Edit: also, my TMS doc here in NYC is Dr. Ira Rashbaum. A really bright, sweet guy who trained under/worked with Sarno. I have a call into him as well. |

Posted - 03/04/2011 : 19:59:20 That's interesting. What is the reasoning behind the throat and tailbone being the last places people have tms pain? It seems sort of weird to me. |

Sounds good Avik, I had a Ludwig's Angina (serious throat swelling) recently and my butt's been hurting me too. Can you say who your TMS doc is? I like his thinking.
