Posted - 02/16/2011 : 12:25:56 I have had great success with my back/neck/sciatic/glute TMS pain. My newest gremlin is GERD/reflux and it's really uncomfortable. How come I was so successful with the back and neck stuff but not with other symptoms? Seems weird that other symptoms don't go away like the back/neck 5 years ago even with my hard work. I am trying really hard to do the self talk and affirmations that worked before on my back. Suggestions anyone? In desperation to get some temporary relief while I work on my thoughts I tried Prilosec and Protonics prescriptions and they're not working either. |

Posted - 02/17/2011 : 20:16:54 Mary, I wouldn't say it was more effective than the stronger class of drugs. It is over the counter, yes. I took 75 mg. once a day, it was about 20 years ago. Then I stopped it and I was fine. I never would have gone on Prevacid and the others I've tried in the PPI category if I knew then what I know now. Mine started after a Thanksgiving dinner and I should have just let it pass.
I am pretty sure that if I buckle down and stay away from citrus, tomatoes, onions, chocolate, mint, etc. I could go off this. I don't want to be on it forever...I just want to normalize my body chemistry. I so much don't believe in drugs. Maybe if I had something like diabetes and it was really necessary but I would like to be off this.
I'd say give Zantac a try but I also think you might consider getting an endoscopy. I was out like a light, just like with the colonoscopy and knew nothing. Twice I had it done, 2 different doctors and had no awareness, woke up and it was over, a quick procedure. I don't want to steer you wrong...again, get a good GI doctor and see what he says about controlling the acidity with diet and lots of water which helps dilute the acid.
As far as TMS, I have always had a "nervous stomach", IBS, whatever name it has now so stress really does play a part in creating the acid. I would be curious what happens, so please post it and I hope you find relief. I know how distressing it is! |

Posted - 02/17/2011 : 16:40:36 Suan828, Did you find Zantac that more effective? I thought for sure Prilosec would be good but not budging. Protonics, I thought that was a heavy duty one too. I'll try Zantac. Isn't that OTC now? Art, thanks as always for your great insights! |

Posted - 02/17/2011 : 06:20:58 TMS gives a great deal. Or the understanding of TMS I should say. But we ignore some symptoms at our peril. I've hurt myself more than once trying to run through things that turned out to be actual injuries. I've a torn hamstring currently caused by snow shoveling and running through pain.
We're not supermen and women. The first rule is a good one, especially in unfamiliar areas. See a physician. |

Posted - 02/16/2011 : 20:31:43 Mary, I have been on a PPI for about 4 years. I wish I had never started. When I tried to wean off, it came back with a vengeance. Your body gets used to them. If anything, I would suggest something in the lesser class, like Zantac. I did take Zantac about 20 years ago for a month and then I was fine.
GERD is a funny thing. If you have an endoscopy, they will see an irritation most likely. They may see a hiatal hernia that's contributing to it. There are things you can try but you ave probably researched this...stop smoking if you do, get any weight off your tummy area, don't eat the foods that can relax the LES muscle...raise your headboard.
I have cut down my med to 1/3 of the dose and want to get off it. The body needs some acid and there are other problems that can occur when we're on these drugs. However, not everything is TMS... there are structural problems and there is a condition called Barrett's esophagus that can lead to cancer...if the esophagus is irritated for a prolonged amount of time.
I suggest going to a good gastroenterologist, maybe getting an endoscopy before starting something as strong as a proton pump inhibitor. They are given out way too freely. |

Posted - 02/16/2011 : 17:57:28 Also last year I had trouble singing and the ENT doc said it's reflux all the way causing the vocal chords so much trouble. So I know I have reflux. Question is how to get it to stop. |

Posted - 02/16/2011 : 17:56:15 No I haven't been to the doctor but I did email him for the prescription to give it a try (protonix). I guess I know I've been under a lot of stress so I assume it's TMS. What else can cause reflux? I never assume reflux is not mind induced. Sarno says bacteria in the stomach is an old myth. |

Posted - 02/16/2011 : 14:04:34 Hi Mary,
I've found that the best antidote to TMS is lack of fear and worry concerning whatever symptom it might be. This is difficult at times because you can't, or I can't anyway, force it. I have to really believe that either the thing is TMS, or that even if it's not TMS it can't hurt me. Otherwise, it's a much longer process for me.
You've been to the doctor? If so, I'm assuming they found nothing? You've had great success in the past, are you doing the same things in response? |
