I have been lurking for a few hours and have decided to register and post. I have had back pain on and off. Last time I had a problem was about 8 years ago. Minor pain but nothing to get me to the Chiropractor. I hurt my back in September and was in bed for 2 weeks. Had an MRI done and low and behold 3 herniated disks. After my 2 week flare up almost pain free. I think about hurting my back constantly. I bought 2 Sarno books. Started reading them last night and my back is killing me. I am afraid to pick up the Sarno books or I will be paralyzed. Well not really but you all know what I mean. Thanks

If anyone knows of a TMS Doctor in NJ I can go and talk to would be helpful.

Hi joemac,

The MRI can produce wonderful pictures. But keep in mind that just because you can see the HNP (herniated disc) on the image does not necessarily mean the disc is the cause of the pain. There have been studies done proving this.

People with pain and people with no pain were both given MRIs. Some people had bad discs, no pain. Some people have the severe pain, no bad discs. Some people have no pain, good discs. Some people had both pain and bad discs. Nothing lined up. As Dr. Sarno says, the doc has to get the diagnosis right.

I was also fooled by this (and by the medical community) for many years as well, and also obsessed about it. My L5-S1 disc is completely blown out (extruded) and touches the spinal cord. You said that 2 weeks after your flare up, you were almost pain free, I think that's an important observation. A HNP takes many months to dehydrate, so you likley would not have such relief if the disc was causing the pain.

You have nothing to fear, even if the pain returns, it cannot damage you. Yes, the pain is real, but its being caused by your brain. Re-read Dr. Sarno's books, coming to grips with your TMS is where you must start. Also, read through some past posts in this forum, you will likley find other people whos story is like yours. Here's one...

Having a Doctor tell me there was nothing physcially wrong with me(thats after seeing a MRI with a herniated disk) helped me a great deal. When i was told this i still didn't believe it. But after reading DR Sarno's book i did believe it.
I think we expect the pain to go away immediately when we apply the methods. I think this works for very few people. Its takes time and effort. When people have gotten better they have gone through the same thing you have been going through. What you see here is the condenced versions. You don't see the minute/hour/daily struggle people went through. You are not the first person to experience this. There are some great success stories here. To me these these are a valadation that this works. How can you not get excited when you read stories like FarmerEds. I still some fear of hard physcial activity and getting a spasm again. In time this will be gone. I have started to run again and my knee gets sore or the sides of my lower/back butt get sore. I can lift weights and do everything else but when i start to run i get sore. Its just programming. TMS seems to fight me every step of the way. The fear has been the hardest to overcome. Its taken me a long time to get where im at now. It took a long time for the logic to sink in. I was exactly where you were. Reading/journaling/believing takes time. I never did have a "breakthough" or really know what was bothering me.
A lot of things bother me but im not really sure what was in my unconscious. Dave and FarmerED have given great advice. Its up to you to decide what to do. And only you can do this.

As Tennis Tom suggests, please add your email to your profile (TT is a superb member and will email you) and go see a TMS doc in your area. Be sure to return here and let us know how you are doing.

Take care, -Stryder.
