This is my biggest problem at the moment and its really smacking my confidence in the tms belief. The last three weeks I've had 4 good days when the pain reduced by half maybe more, then this week the pain has cone back with vengeance .. its really getting me down. .. one minute I think " im getting it, this is it its going. .. the pains going" and then a few days later I feel like im not getting anywhere. .. has anyone had This up and down. .. one step forward two steps back... any that is a success story? Or just any advice in general. ..

This to shall pass....

Hi marjrc... its one of my toughest things are that moment. .. to have something for a long period of time. . To find something which finally makes sense. .. to have some good days when you think "brilliant. . Im getting my life back" and then in my case I go for a walk and after 30 mind the pain kicks in and I start having the doubts all over again... its a constant case of rebuilding yourself. .. time and time everytime the pain kicks in, comes back you have to be on your guard, remaining positive. .. not letting those fears and doubts get the better of you. .. not being beaten... its tiring and draining and it seems like its a full-time job. .. im hoping that one day it will be a sideline to the other work in life not a occupation but a hobby
.. im hoping I'll look back and see this as the best thing as it taught me why and how I can deal with future chronic pain.

This to shall pass....

hb, thank you for posting this because I too feel this way many times. I can be relatively pain-free for a few days, have a week or two that are quite good even, then pain comes back or I get anxious or lose sleep, or .... you know!

As Sue said, the title of your thread is what helps me too. I tell myself that this is not structural, nothing is 'wrong' with me, so the pain will and does go away.

Dave, thank you for your words. They are a big help to me too! :)

You need to work to change this way of thinking. It's tough, and it doesn't happen overnight, but keep trying and have faith that in the long run, the pain will fade if you do this.

Instead of worrying that the "difficult issues" are going to cause pain, welcome the pain! Consider the pain as a benign signal that you need to take some time to address emotional issues. Force yourself to think about those difficult issues. Really try to follow them down and figure out how the "child inside you" feels. The child's feelings are irrational, embarassing, dangerous, forbidden. The child is pissed off that you have these pressures in your life. The child feels things that you may deem inappropriate, for example, feelings of resentment towards your loved ones who are causing this stress in your life. The child is selfish and doesn't want to deal with any of these things.

Do your best to really pursue the depths of how you might be feeling about things going on in your life. Note, there is no way you can really know what is going on in your unconscious. It is the act of trying to figure it out that is important. This sends a message to your unconscious that despite its efforts to distract you with pain, you are going to feel these "forbidden" emotions anyway. Do this repeatedly, any time you are aware of the pain. Recondition yourself to do this for the rest of your life.

Consider this: if something was structurally wrong, would the pain come and go seemingly at random?

Dave, this is my ongoing proof! But I hear ya, HB, it hurts and that is a downer. It's tiresome and frustrating. Your title of this thread, though, is what gets me through. Having faith that it will be gone keeps me from total despair. And when I do the spiritual work and the soul searching the pain becomes less intense and disappears more quickly. I am hoping for a time in the future when it just stays away most of the time.

take good care,
Sue

Thanks dave, its very difficult to stay positive when your back in pain when you think you were doing so well.... I seem to have a lot of difficult issues in my life at the moment and if I start feeling that there going to cause me pain in my back because of there stress content then I'm panicking that this is going to set me off... but you can't. Avoid stressful situations in life, I'm just not sure how to deal with them when I'm aware there contributing to the tms pain...

This to shall pass....

This is common. You need to stay the course.

Consider this: if something was structurally wrong, would the pain come and go seemingly at random?

Continue to do the work. Whenever you are aware of the pain, ignore it and shift your focus to emotional issues that you might not be fully facing up to in your life. Try to figure out what might be going on that is triggering the TMS response. Your mind is trying to protect you from feeling something. Try to find what it might be.
