I'm 21 years old and after spending much of the last 10 years of my life in pain I think this may offer some help to me. I believe this because none of my pain ever makes any sense and no one has ever found anything wrong with me even though I've had several MRIs, XRays. The only thing that has ever helped any of my pain is seeing a chiropracter and that may have all been in my head. I have pain in my wrists, shoulders, numbness in my hands, neck/upperback pain, and occassional ankle pain. Almost all my pain is on the right side of my body. I thought a lot of this pain may have been coming from to much computer use, I'm a computer science major and have been crazy about computers since I was 12. The weird thing is, my pain relates to my stress levels and sometimes all the pain in my entire body will just dissapear but reappear a few days later. I know a year ago I was going to the doctor because my blood pressure was consistently 160/80, I was going to physical therapy for upper back pain, and constantly battling my wrist pain with stretches. This just so happened to be a time when I was dealing with a cheating partner, financial troubles, and family issues. I recently ordered some books on TMS and am hoping they give me some insight into my issues. Has anyone else experienced what I have?? Any support would really help put me at ease.

Okay, just thought I would update since it's been a few days. After reading both the Mind Body Prescription and Pain Free for Life I am feeling really great. The exercises stated in the Pain Free for Life book are extremely helpful and offer immediate relief. I am currently at only a discomfort in my muscles from where my pain used to be about a 6/10 at all times. I was able to work without pain, play a video game for 10 hours straight last night, and get up the next day and do some very heavy lifting and have had zero pain. One difference I have noticed is that my muscles burn instead of have pain when I lift and my muscles are so loose. I feel so great and hope to start working out soon. I have noticed it takes a consistent effort on my part to notice my emotional state, I get upset very easily and if I let it get the best of me I feel all my muscles start tightening up, my hands get cold/numb, and my neck starts to hurt a little. All it takes is a few minutes of relaxing myself and the pain slowly fades away, it's all about emotional states for me.

I fear I may be posting this a little prematurely but after reading Dr. Sarno's book last night my back is feeling very relaxed, very little pain. Pain in my hands has lessened, when I feel my back tighten I simply take a deep breathe and relax the muscles and tell my body to relax and chill. Unfortunately I'm now getting a lot of pain in my right ankle that I haven't had a in a long time, not sure what's up with that.

It happened to me too! I have since had setbacks, some quite severe, but they pass so quickly it amazes me.

take good care,
Sue

Also, thanks for the reply Tom, I'm going to start being active again just because I enjoy it, not to relieve my pain. Anything that required my back moving at all, or not at all actually caused me back pain, sitting caused more pain than anything. TMS may not be causing any serious damage but my lack of exercise is not very good for my overall health, I've gained about 40lbs since I started experiencing severe back/wrist/shoulder/ankle pain.

I think my issue is I'm still slightly focusing on the fact I was diagnosed with scholiosis, but with a degree of 7 my doctor told me most people with a degree of 20 dont ever even experience pain.

I think if I can just convince myself enough that there is nothing physically wrong with me I can get over this but that's an issue as well as figuring out what I have repressed in my mind that is causing this discomfort.

You are in pain if you exercise...you are in pain if you DONT exercise...all things being equal EXERCISE!!! You will be much better off for doing it! Is there any form of exercise that does not cause you pain?

Dr. Sarno says scoliosis is TMS if that helps to convince you there is nothing physically wrong with you.

And...you don't have to rumminate over what you have repressed to be "cured". We all repress all the time, part of the human condition, but the GOOD NEWS is all you need to do is read the books, learn the theory and absorb the TMS "knowledge penicillin".

Good Luck!

Hi devon
I used to have a lot of the same symptoms as you for many years.
I have recovered from the worst of it, but I still struggle with symptoms.
I suggest you read Dannord's story of recovery in the "success stories" and archives.
It's a remarkable read as you watch him recover from computer rsi over the course of a few weeks.
I should probably go back and read it again myself

keep up the good work

I used to be an extremely active person, I was very fit and had little or no body fat. I was running around 5 miles a day and lifting weights even though I was in pain to try and strengthen the muscles that were causing me pain. In the end I just quit working out because it caused me so much pain to even move. When I quit working out I noticed the pain got even worse. A year later today I am feeling better and am able to work on the computer but am petrified to work out because I'm scared of being in pain. I think my issue is I'm still slightly focusing on the fact I was diagnosed with scholiosis, but with a degree of 7 my doctor told me most people with a degree of 20 dont ever even experience pain. I went to physical therapy to help strengthen my spine only to not get any help whatsoever but got some helpful stretches that temporarily releived my pain. After no success with the pt I started seeing a chiropracter which took xrays and found nothing wrong other than a little disc degeneration that was normal, it was not even in the area where I was experiencing the pain. The doctor said that I had some of the tightest muscles shes ever seen and she couldn't understand what I did to piss them off so bad. I think if I can just convince myself enough that there is nothing physically wrong with me I can get over this but that's an issue as well as figuring out what I have repressed in my mind that is causing this discomfort.

Hi Devon,

It sounds like you have an excellent understanding of TMS theory and that's the first big step on your journey--acceptance of the Good Doctor's controversial theory.

At 21 you should be aiming to do a minimum 30 minutes of aerobic movement daily: walking, running, swimming, bike riding, etc. My call given your brief history, is your body has been rebelling from being sedentary behind a computer since you were 12.

Our bodies were meant to move! It wasn't that long ago that we were hunters and gatherers and our existence required movement to survive.

At the turn of the previous century secretaries typed away on manual typewriters from dawn to dusk and RSI did not exist. There's nothing wrong with you keyboarding as much as you like and you won't hurt yourself, but you need to balance that out with some form of exercise that maintains your bodily systems. After about two weeks of exercising everyday, your body will get conditioned to the discomfort of building new muscles, your blood pressure will go down and you will feel 1000% better.

You have your head wrapped around TMS theory--now you must convince your subconscious, on a cellular level, through movement.

Just Do It!

Thanks a lot for the reply art. I'm about 1/4 of the way through mind body connection and I'm starting to see a lot of myself in the pages, especially the obsessive and perfectionist nature. Also I notice that exercise makes my body feel great while I'm doing it but a few days later I feel 10x worse than before which really makes me shy away and not want to work out.

You're in the right place, Devon. Most of us can relate to what you're saying. Read the books. Hang around the forum. I can just about guarantee things will get better for you...

Congratulations on figuring this out. Most don't, especially those as young as you..
