Posted - 11/06/2010 : 07:51:54 So my question is .... my problem is with my lower back (si joint) the pain worse when walking. .. so my question if because while I'm having trouble overcoming the pain while walking. .. if I can which I haven't tried yet... jog??? I'm not a runner which is why I feel jogging would take my focus off the pain. .. or at least I hope it would. .. good idea or not? I feel that in my head if I jog out the pain. .. then surely I can walk it off to? |

Posted - 11/07/2010 : 15:27:22 And I rode my damned bicycle for the first time in well over a year, and I did some projects in the garage.
The knot in my back that I spoke about in a previous topic has smoothed out. I attribute this to finally realizing that I'm doing this to myself, regardless if my brain is depriving my cells of blood because of anxiety or whatever. It's me. Me to a big degree.
"Good going" is right. The pain/discomfort is still there, but I'm just too pissed off with it now to let it get the best of me.
I'm in a fight to keep this attitude and progress. |

Today I got fed up.
I used to jog and run before all this came on last year. I got up this morning and said that I am perpetuating the conditioning I have been doing since last year: no jogging, walking fast, etc..
My fear is my mid-back protruding disc, plus discomfort that I believe might be coming from a ventral or incisional hernia (from gallbladder surgery).
I put on my athletic shorts, running shoes and left the house. I walked at a brisk pace for a mile or so, because I'm so out of shape, and then did a slow jog for a bit.
The discomfort I feel is in my chest and side, and it was still there while I was walking and even jogging, and I am doing all the Sarno exercises, but I'm believing that the release of these muscles and nerves, no matter how the brain gets a talking to, will take time.
I'm working this from the angle that I'm doing a complete body work over. I'm 40 pounds overweight, so I will watch my diet. I haven't been exercising, which I used to do for stress relief and because I don't want to be a frail old man, and I'm starting on a number of projects that I have put off because I have "not felt good".
I think you might be right: try jogging.
Trying a different thing from what you've been doing is sometimes a tonic and it eliminates the conditioning of what you have been doing.
I know for me, every walk I taken for the last year was a "test" to see how I was feeling. As Steven King put it in "Duma Key", a fictional account of his injuries and recovery, every walk for me has been a "mini-physical". I'm changing the focus to make the walks/jogs goal orientated.

When I had upper back/trapezoid muscle area pain many years ago I was a recreational runner who had really cut back on that due to fear that it was making things worse. I had been preparing for a 5 mile run that was a fun Christmas event with people wearing costumes, etc. and the day of the run I was hurting and really didn't want to go. I made myself go anyway and at the time was probably the longest run I had ever attempted. Afterward, all the pain was completely gone-it was the best and most released I had felt for many months. Made a real shift in what was going on in that area for me. Not medical advice here, but just giving you my story for thought. |

Posted - 11/06/2010 : 09:07:10 Hi thanks for you reply. .. I have tried to talk to my mind and tell it to go away. .. and focus on the emotional issues I had just before the pain started. .. but the pain gets so bad at times. .. sometimes I haven't been able to get back to the car. .. also I'm a very much all or nothing person. .. so I'm reading the books. .. journalling... putting my all into the process. .. and then stupid as it sounds if I then go for a walk and I get the pain. .. I feel like I've failed and that I'm back to square one I know this isn't the case but its my personality type. I also know I'm conditioned to have pain when I walk as that's what I expect. |

Posted - 11/06/2010 : 08:53:07 Hi Healingback. Your pain is very similar to how mine was. When I walked I used to repeat over and over the daily reminders for healing back pain, and reassure myself Conditioning was to blame, and that nothing was "wrong", and I walked through the pain until it abated. Worth a try?
