i was splitting wood the other day, as i have been all summer and thought wow i havent had any back pain from this back breaking activity... guess what happened yesterday.. i bent over to pick up a spoon yesterday...my back went into a spasm where i couldnt even move for an hour. its amazing how the the whole tms process evolves.
on a logical note, ive never heard of any disease thay causes as many symptoms as tms-this makes me feel better knowing this. even cancer doesnt "move" at the speed of tms. my symptoms sometimes change by the hour-yet when i go to bed at night...nothing, my bed is like home base

Personally I think there are two traits that are common in TMS-prone people: (1) Difficulty displaying emotions; (2) high intelligence.

Many TMS-prone people grew up in families where it was not typical to display emotion so they developed defenses. This is especially true in cases of neglect or abuse.

Intelligent people tend to overthink and overanalyze, and this becomes an escape or a distraction. Essentially, we 'think' instead of 'feel' and it is the lack of being in touch with one's emotions that is an ingredient in TMS. Luckily, our intelligence can also be our savior since we are able to comprehend and accept Dr. Sarno's theory.

These are just my ideas, FWIW...

Mine loves to shift from anxiety to back pain to eczema to intrusive thoughts.

When I make a breakthrough in my life that's when I get the symptoms. My subconcious will sabotage me.

I meet a girl WHAM! have some TMS
Start to enjoy my mountain biking again KAPOW! have some more TMS buddy backpain do ya?
Enjoying my running BANG! how about I TMS you with a little IT band pain so you have to walk home halfway through your run
Looking forward to a holiday THUMP! you need a little more TMS how about a fear of flying how's that sound?
Got two weeks of holidays? BANG! have a bit of cramps and anxiety

There was a fascinating story that I read about probably ten years back, about a women with multiple personalities (i think it was 6 or 7 in total).

One of her personalities had cancer while the other 5 or 6 did not. Yes, the cancer completely came and went with the shift in her mental state. It absolutely baffled doctors; I will try and find the article...

If this doesnt convince one of the undeniable connection between mind and body, i dont know what will.

I don't view TMS as a "disease" perhaps more of a "dis-ease". Dr. Sarno terms it part of the "human-condition".

TMS manifestations can move very fast, at the speed of a blush or the fight/flight instinct. The pathway is the nervous system, which is electro-chemical: cerebrospinal fluid, poly-neuropeptides, pro-preoceptors, etc.

I think TMS can also move very slowly, through life-long Pavlovian conditioning. Dr. Bernie Siegel writes eloquently about cancer. He is name-called as a "nut" by some--but so is Dr. Sarno. When opponents and conventional thinkers don't have logical arguments, they resort to name-calling and character assassination--calling someone a "psycho".

I believe our sub-conscious can "give" us cancers as well as "cure" them. This would be with the involvement of the auto-immune system. My mother did not die of kidney cancer, she died of the complications of the surgery, (requiring over 100 pints of blood).

The "mindbody" are inseperable.

The more you have experiences like this, laugh them off, and recover quickly, the more you are conditioning yourself to think about and react properly to TMS symptoms. Over time, the flare-ups should be fewer and far between. Hang in there and don't let TMS win!
