Posted - 08/14/2010 : 15:13:44 Just wondering how long most people wait before they get an MRI to rule out serious issues. The last time my back/shoulder arm hurt this severely my doctor had me wait until after failed PT (6 weeks) for an MRI. Ruling out the serious unlikely chance of a tumor or cancer enabled me to accept the psychological component. It took 4 months to get better after that.
Also, why is it that everyone in Sarno's books heals so quickly after accepting that there is no structural issues causing their pain and that just by identifying their anger or resentment w/o actually resolving it, their pain ceases, even gradually? I'm just jealous I think. |

As much as Dr. Sarno is a physician and a healer, he is also someone trying to sell books.
I believe it is a disservice to his readers, and sets unrealistic expectations for recovery. One of the key ingredients to long-term relief of TMS symptoms is to take a long-term view and not get frustrated with lack of results or short-term setbacks. I wish Dr. Sarno would have highlighted the fact that while many people may recover quickly, it is not uncommon for recovery to take weeks, months, or even years. It is highly dependent on the individual. |

I would think the "quick cure", after seeing Dr. Sarno, would be due to the powerful effect of the mind over the body known as the placebo effect. Being told by the "main man" of TMS himself, the Good Doctor, that there is nothing seriously structurally wrong with you, would deliver a VERY powerful psychological injection of TMS "knowledge penicillin".
Whenever I am told by a doctor, at a check-up, that I'm in good health, I walk out feeling great and confident for a very long time, even years afterward. The corollary to this is the lack of improvement for my structural issue, my right hip, after being told by two TMS docs that it's not TMS but "significant arthritis".
Dr. Sarno does not see patients until after they have been dx'ed and imaged by their own doctor or a string of numerous other doctors. He is the doctor of last resort for those suffering with chronic structural pain. He screens his patients carefully through an hour long life-history interview.
He determines if they are psychologically open to his theory. From years of experience, he determines those who will not accept TMS and benefit from his program. Perhaps they need their pain as a defense mechanism for protection from emotional pain. These he sends on their way, saving their time and money.
In Western culture, the white coat imprimtur, is one of the most powerful healing devices available, along with surgery, which Dr. Sarno says is the most powerful placebo available.

Posted - 08/14/2010 : 16:24:45 I think the answer to that is that any issue that is thought to be structural or organic is seen as problemtatic and possibly unresolvable whilst an issue that is seen as psychosomatic or functional is seen as far less serious and also more likely to be transient in nature.
The obvious outcome of this is that if we are constantly concerned that we are dealing with either an undiagnosed serious and/or chronic organic condition we are constantly worried about it and monitoring it and therefore heaping more and more anxiety on an already stressed nervous system. Once we accept that we are structurally sound and embrace a more holistic attitude towards our health and symptoms this often allows us to relax which in itself will lead us towards healing and recovery. |
