Posted - 07/14/2010 : 13:01:23 This is a new one for me. I've taken up the piano on top of the freelance writing, so I'm using my hands 10 hours a day. Perhaps the question should be, what does TMS in the hands generally feel like as of course I'd rather that,
Here's what I have: crampy shooting pains in back of right hand, stiffness along outside of right hand, sore thumbs.
Those of you who've had good success with hand stuff, does any of this sound familiar???
Sincere thanks, A. |

There's an easy "secret" to "pinpointing" life's stressful situations that are causing TMS symptoms. Look at the Holmes-Rahe list. See the link below. Good Luck.

Posted - 07/18/2010 : 14:38:04 Hiya Teddybear, (Great name, by the way!) thanks so much for your insight & wisdom..I'm sure you're 100% right on it all..and I didn't mean to wrongly advice my buddy, Art..Just was worried about him.. I still feel like I am a long way to go to cure my TMS..My wrists hurt right now as I type..and ingrained in my head is OVERUSE OVERUSE..and what most think about that, even doctors! I paint a lot, I used to play piano (but now I don't)..I type A lot too..I used to work out (now I don't, which is a big mistake!) Going swimming now as that doesn't increase any pain in my head or otherwise..I have A lot on my plate now..Issues about getting older, fears of dying alone, big time money issues..(no one is buying art right now)..etc..Missing NJ & don't have the cash to move back..Hate living in LV, but stuck here..yikes, I could go on & on..but too much typing..Thanks again for your insight.. Hi Art!! Hope ur feeling great!! Hugs, K |

I tend to box myself in with fear. For example, I'm investing more money than I can afford in a grand piano, something I've always wanted, so of course the worry is if I don't take it easy I'll not be able to play it and it will be money out the window..
Wow ! I am really impressed with your ability to figure out what it is you fear! Though I tend to think I that I have grasped the TMS theory pretty well, more often than not, confidently pinpointing what could be bothering me doesn't come as easily... |

Posted - 07/17/2010 : 14:06:47 Hey TeddyBear...
All well said. I have considered getting one of those squeeze balls to build strength as the piano playing is relatively new to me, at least playing hours every day, but I know the Sarno conventional wisdom in that regard.

I do pretty well with ignoring most running injuries, back problems, but this is a new area for me, all this piano playing. By the way, I don't play 10 hours a day. I meant that between the typing and playing, I'm using my hands for about that long... |

Hey Art, I have classic TMS RSI..I hurt them once working out but they act up everytime I am overusing them playing piano, teaching piano, painting & typing..They hurt right now but i am typing anyway..I didn't experience the symptoms u mentioned..I get pain in the wrists, certain fingers, shooting pain in the palm and sometimes up the arm..You need to make sure you are using good posture for ur back and hands when u play and DON"T play 10 hours a day!! That would irritate anyone's hands..that's too much..Relax and shake out hands b4 playing, do stretching etc..and work the TMS program too, of course, to rule that out! Hugs, Karen
Karen, First of all, I'd like to say that I'm both proud of you and glad that you typed that post despite still experiencing pain. At this rate, you will most likely be pain free/deconditioned in no time, provided you keep this attitude up!
However, I get the impression that you are still harbouring some beliefs that might be holding you back.
For instance, I would like to point out that the recurrent discomfort you described after overusing your hands, has nothing to do with your initial work out injury whatsoever. To me, this screams classic conditioning. First of all, as you agree or may not agree, your injury has had plenty of time to heal. Besides, as counter-intuitive as this may sound, overusing one hands is virtually impossible for anyone who has been using their hands as intensively and frequently as you (painting, piano playing, and typing). Your body should have acclimatised to the activities a long time ago.
I realize you only mean well when you suggest that art both pays attention to correct posture and refraining from playing 10 hours a day. However, I personally threw the above-mentioned, often well-intentioned, admonitions out of the window immediately after having read one of Sarno's books. Recovering seems virtually impossible unless you are practically fearless when it comes to -unrestricted- activity. Of course, I would never advise anyone to do any activity for 10 hours straight. However, I feel that realizing that using the computer, or any musical instrument, the entire day, though slightly monotonous, wouldn't hurt injure myself. This was very important, if not essential, in my recovery.
Finally, art, since you shared that you are relatively new to TMS symptoms regarding the hands, the goodist in me feels compelled to advise you only to stretch if it makes you feel better or improves your playing. I strongly advise against stretching as a means of ''preventing'' or ''reducing'' painful symptoms after an activity.
P.S Karen, art, I hope I don't come across as if I am belittling anyone's hand/RSI issues here, especially since my first, major TMS symptom was RSI/tendonitis, I can really sympathize!

Posted - 07/16/2010 : 07:55:54 Oh my, I didn't realize that! That's awesome that you are getting back to it..Even though I teach beginning piano, I am rusty because I don't play much due to my wrists..I'd rather save them for painting & typing..Yup, sounds like TMS in your case too.. |

Posted - 07/16/2010 : 06:17:17 Thanks Karen. Not really a newbie though. Played as a kid, then was a keyboard guy in band. I'm leaning ever closer to thinking TMS. I mean, given my history, why wouldn't it be?
It's like a bad dream. "It seemed so real, doctor." |

I know my question's on the dumb side, ,but I really don't know what typical symptoms might be. On the other hand (hah!), I realize it doesn't really matter. They are what they are and it's up to me to find a way to deal with them.
