About 3 months ago i was told i needed 2 of my mercury fillings replaced in molars and also another new filling in back molar. I opted for the white fillings to avoid mercury and also for cosmetic reasons. the first 2 fillings didn't go to well so trasferred to another dentist who did the 3rd white one.She adjusted the other 2 and in the end took one out and replaced it with a sedative filling. However this is failing now and the tooth has died and i need a root canal. What worries me is the other 2 fillings are still not right either so i'm scared i will need root canals and crowns on these too. The cost implication scares me and also i'm quite vain about my teeth and looks and am only 36. I think i have had tms before..unexplained back pain, carpel tunnel (that went away), lower stomach pains, shoulder pains etc..but this is totally new.I am diabetic type 1 so i think thats added to my health anxieties as once before i was 'properly' ill
i would like to believe it's something new to grab my attention so to speak but how can u 'think' u'r teeth into dying???
any info or ways i can try and help myself would be most grateful as i feel this is taking over my life and finding it hard to do anything or think about anything but teeth!!
thanks Sara

a question for wavy soul if you see this..
when you had your second lot of toothpain did you have any of it in root canalled teeth from years ago...i'm just wondering as my root canal tooth still hurts even after 3 weeks of being done?? so wondering if it's not done properly or am i holding onto the pain so to speak? also i'm having pains in teeth that have had no work done ie no fillings at all in them so am def thinking tms for this!
saralou Posted - 07/17/2010 : 11:55:35
i would try and find a different one but as she's started it now..i think i'll let her finish it. also it's hard trying to find a decent dentist in the uk. she is a private one not nhs one but resonably priced. she's also right nest to my work so i can go at lunctimes and not have to keep having time off..so am with her for the convienince...the lump is starting to go down today so hopefully it won't be much longer now!

Sara, I would try another dentist. A little amoxicillin would get rid of your infection and discomfort and you could put it behind you immediately instead of this prolonged treatment. I have moved several times, so my root canals have been spread out with 3 different dentists and all give oral antibiotics. This is a real easy procedure, albiet unpleasant for an hour, and she is making it pure misery. Azithromiacin also works good if you are allergic to pennicillan. I think you have a holistic dentist.
saralou Posted - 07/17/2010 : 02:45:43
i have asked should i take antibiotics for it and she said NO we are treating it the right way and if u use antibiotics all the tme then they won't work when you really need them? so i guess i can't make her give them to me. i'm seeing an oral surgeon on thursday about my wisdom tooth so maybe i'll ask what he thinks. its getting to me thou..don't even wanna get up in the morning..gonna do some more tms work today and possibly some eft stuff...
thanks again
sara

Sara, for what it's worth, I have always been given antibiotics orally for the infection. Usually 5 days worth. You might ask. I have always had the root canal in one visit and then gone back in a few weeks to be fitted for the crown.

hi susie thanks for the reply!
going to the dentist actually caused it lol..i have gone regularly all my life and only needed two replacement filling and one new one .which apparently were small,,,but for some reason my dentist can't fathom i haven't responded very well to them! i'm hoping the lump will settle as the dentist is packing the tooth with antibitics everyweek untill the infection is gone before she finishes the root canal. it has taken over my life thou as i'm in constant pain ( even thou low grade prob 3-4 out 10 it never goes away) and also can't eat properly and as i'm diabetic this has affected my overall health. i think stress and anxiety are making it worse thou. i'm reading louise hay heal your life at the mo. using affirmations that my teeth are healthy and can repair and ate NOT unusually sensitive as my dentist said!
thanks again for the advise..knowing there are others out there with same probs doesn't make me feel like a freak (which my dentist is at the mo) just as well i'm not scared of dentists lol!!

Sara, I just read your posts and it sounds like you are having a tremendous amount of anxiety from your teeth. Infected teeth can be very painful and it sure sounds like that is what is happening to you. The lump is pretty indicitive of infection. BTW, that lump can remain several months after the root canal so don't be alarmed. I have had about 9 root canals. Seems like, as you age, your teeth move forward which changes your occlusion which can damage your teeth as you are not biting down the same. The best way to avoid root canals is to have check-ups evey six months to catch the cavity before it damages the tooth. I didn't do so and paid the price and the dumb thing is that I went to school to be a Hygienist. You are actually more prone to cavaties as you age. I had so many when I was young, I thought I was done with that. Also, I didn't know dentists still used amalgam. Mine does not, but I have had plenty of amalgam fillings in the past with no adverse effect. For me tms never affects my teeth because I,like Tom, am very comfortable at the dentist. Whenever you see a bump on your gum that is sore, there is usually somthing going on. Never let an abcess go because that infection can do some bad stuff to you. Best to you, Susie

well went bk to dentist today..apparently my gum is infected around my impacted wisdom tooth..can't belive this is happening now as well as failing fillings, root canals etc...i have suspicion that this wisdom tooth problem is a tms thing as when i saw an oral surgeon a few weeks ago he pointed out the impacted wisdom tooth on xray and said ' thats not going anywhere is it' i'm sure my brain at that point thought hmm we;ll see!!! cos now its got infected and potetially needs to come out..mad as i didn't even know wisdom tooth was even there till a few months ago! and it hasn't done anything in my 36yrs!!! weird...tms induced anyone think??
and how does one treat thins tmsly? as it's physical infection?
saralou Posted - 07/16/2010 : 04:34:17
well update on teeth..am due for part two of root canal but it's started hurting again last few days...the lump is still above the tooth too..so i don't know if it's working (or my body doing something weird!!) to make me want to pull it out!! The trouble is last night the other teeth that have been worked on and a few gums here and there have started hurting like crazy!! i feel like a nutter going to the dentist saying this hurts and this and this...
i don't know what to do..i want to so believe it's all tms as i can't believe this is happening to me...i've never had dental probs in my life and now i feel like i'm living some kinda nightmare with it all!!!
anyway i'll see what dentist says now!! :-(
alexis Posted - 07/09/2010 : 20:03:46
I hope it's feeling better now and that your other teeth settle down - good luck with the permanent crown.

I agree you likely don't need meds and really worry only because I know there are a few other people reading this who really do need more help and yet still have similar hesitations about exploring medication. From what I've seen and read many people who have tried everything really do get help. I only once had a single anti-anxiety pill, but from just that I could really see the potential uses first hand.

I have a pocelain crown near the front too. I can't actually remember which tooth now ... maybe it was a partial crown? Two of the molars are visible if I look closely, because one you can see the ridge at the base and the other is the white gold that looks a little different (though hard to see).

I guess I should know my teeth better than that, but after worrying about teeth a lot a few years back I kind of like that I don't really think past basic maintenance. I'm not actually 100% sure how many root canals I had...I think one tooth was done to fix a crack. I remember on the near-front one the big question was whether I planned to whiten my teeth in the future - picking the color based on unknown future decisions is a little hard.

Good luck with the tooth and I hope the other two turn out not to need anything!

hi guys
thanks for all the advise reguarding medication but i really don't want to take any. i'd rather get through all this without it. after all it was only 3 fillings that has caused it so i don't want to end up on anti depressants/tranquillisers because of it. I've been ill the last few days with somekinda cough/cold virus thing so been taking the chance to rest. hopefully i'll get the root canal done next week now. the other 2 teeth i'm not sure about. will just wait it out i guess and try and keep telling myself it's tms.
thanks again guys
p.s i didn't know you could get white gold crowns..sounds lovely. i'll prob get porcelin one as u can see the tooth when i smile :-)

Hi saralou. I don't know at all if you would benefit from medication - just that some people do, and when you can't recover on your own it would be worth considering. But I would be a little cautious about making medical decisions based too heavily on what you see as your "personality type".

I love the whole MBTI and Big 5 thing -- it's all what I call "horoscopes for the slightly more skeptical". But it's really only "slightly more accurate", and boxing yourself in can cause you to make decisions and react in less than ideal ways. Even if it's a box you've defined yourself. It's very unlikely that you really are a consistent "personality type" unless you've been training yourself into it for years.

The crown I really love, btw, is white gold. I prefer it to my natural teeth. This whole discussion has just reminded me of how much I love this tooth. Sometimes I wish all my teeth were white gold - though it would look funny and obviously be ridiculous. But the crown itself really is that nice.

You are exhibiting some TMS traits:

Fear of leaving your homeostasis if you take a pill. I fear hypnosis because I know nothing about it, but I've heard it may have some beneficial effects for TMS'ers.

Fear of failure, an aspect of inferiority complex which TMS'ers share.

Good luck and keep reading your Sarno for TMS knowledge penicillin.

Hi Saralou,

Words of advice, firstly ask your doc for some tanquilizers, you are so tightly wound-up I doubt you could do the inner-reflection that is the TMS work. I recall in my college days when I was going through a very rough patch a kindly doctor saw how nervous and depressed I was and rx'ed me some Libriums--calmed me down quite nicely.

Earlier this year I had some exstensive dental work. At first they wanted to give me an implant and then the pereodontist said let's give it a go and save the tooth and do a root-canal and a crown instead. The work stretched out over several months, and was costly but was successful. I am actually one of the few people on the planet who enjoys sitting in the dentist chair and find them comfortable and relaxing outside of a few moments of pain (maybe I have some sado-masochistic tendancies?). The periodontic work was pretty painful for some moments, (ask for more pain-killer). The perio doc even had a TV in front of the chair.

So, I guess it boils down to your perspective, I look forward to my teeth cleanings. I get them quarterly and relax in the chair almost like an accupuncture session (which has been proven not to work), and very rarely get a cavity due to the frequent cleanings.

As for your head-cold, yes, it's TMS. Your auto-immune system has given you a crutch to avoid the dental work you are so dreading. Deepak Chopra, says "Staying home with a cold is the Western form of meditation". Get some tranquilizers.

CYA Disclaimer: I am not a doc, only a tennis player, take my advice at your own risk.

Cheers and Good Luck,

just wondering if its my body trying to stop me from having it as
1 i'm not 100% sure it'll solve it
2. i am sh*t scared of having it.
so today am feeling really sorry for myself just lying in bed with head/face/cheek pains oh and earache which is making me think tmj from clenching...
i'm also thinking my body is ill to try and make me slow down and rest as i'm exhausted from all the worry..
any words of advise?
