Unfortunately, the researchers continue to miss the point. Their studies make the erroneous assumption that chronic pain and depression are unrelated symptoms. They imply that meditation treats the symptoms, but I believe it treats the cause.

IMO meditation helps to condition the mind such that these symptoms are no longer manufactured.

It is encouraging to see such studies, but I still wait for the day when a medical researcher will make the leap and reverse the chicken and egg scenario...
