Posted - 05/16/2010 : 00:55:17 I read in Earl the Animator's post that yelling at his brain has worked. Luvtosew then posted that she is more nurturing now.
How about you? Do you yell or nurture?
I've been following with great interest the changes in fashion about how to treat children. For a couple of decades the idea was to really build them up, so they will have high self esteem. This has been in reaction to the previous fashion of putting a child down to get him or her to do better.
Now there is a huge amount of research showing that all this praise actually makes children feel entitled, but not empowered to go to their edge and make effort.
Anyway... I think it is in some way connected with the way we treat our inner children. I made the switch about 30 years ago from beating myself up to nurturing my lil kiddie. Then she became more and more tyrannical, running the whole show with emotions that I felt bound to acknowledge and feel. And running my body with pain.
So for me, a certain kind of authority and discipline on the part of my inner grown-up has seemed to be the appropriate stance towards that part of my brain that seems to want to act out, which in my case is most definitely by making me sick and grabbing all my attention.
How about you?
Love is the answer, whatever the question
