Posted - 04/29/2010 : 21:26:10 I returned to the board last night for the first time in over 6 months (yeah, my fingers have been hurting some when I type - may be TMS, may be nothing).
Just as Guej mentioned, I also was surprised by what seemed to me to be some nasty comments and arguments.
I look at this board as a refuge, and as a place that is supportive. I have found it helpful in the past (and, by the way, despite MRI-diagnosed degenerative neck disease, I can now sit, drive, type, do eskimo rolls while whitewater kayaking, play basketball, run, etc. - all things that have given me trouble in the past - thank all you members of TMSHELP for your part in getting me to where I am now).
We're all perfectionistic here, so this should be easy: please, everyone, reread your post before you post it to make sure it appears to be supportive rather than argumentative.
In other words, let's design all our responses so that they are helping the original poster and the TMSHELP Community.

Whilst you're doing that... if you come across success stories which aren't on the wiki (there will be loads), please do add them
Let me know if you need any technical help.

I think there's some negativity wherever you go, and even before Dave started using this forum software back in 2004 (?) there was some before that.
However you make a good point in going back through old posts. I have a friend who just recently threw in the towel with the medical industry. She'd been hearing me talk about tms a little bit for several years and finally asked me for "The Books". I lent her Sarno's books and Sophers and she bought Sarno's dvd lectures. She's recovering slowly and soon might be reading some of the old topics from here on migraines, allergies, etc. All very helpful!
Cheers! |

Posted - 04/23/2010 : 10:20:27 Hi Marsha!
Here's my two cents. There seems to be a bit too much of personal attacking on the forum lately, as if one's opinion is gospel. I see people's posts cut and paste and thrown back in their faces, told to "stop complaining", reminded of how many times they've posted on the forum, etc. The last 2 times I responded to posts, I had my responses picked apart word for word, and then barked at because the person didn't get better. Who needs that. Heck, I'm still in pain, but I'm not blaming anyone on this site! Spirited debate, is good, but the posts lately seem a bit too negative. Dave is still the voice of reason, and does his best to keep things focused on the basic recovery advice.
With that said, I think it's a shame for people first coming to this forum for help. When I first found the forum last summer, it was filled with helpful advice and encouragement, which I really needed to keep on track and to feel like I wasn't alone in struggling through this. What I started to do lately is every now and then, when I'm need of a lift because I feel discouraged, I look at the posts in reverse order (starting from 2005 forward). I found there were a lot of helpful people in some of the old posts, and some good humor too! I would also see the first posts of someone in severe pain, and months later you could read about their improvement and you could see the progression. I read posts from one guy who was in so much pain, he couldn't walk very much, for a very long time and had lost hope of recovering. I stumbled across a post from him from 3 years later after he had run a marathon. It was really encouraging. So if anyone isn't finding what they need in current posts, I recommend perusing some old ones. There are a lot of gems among them. |
