Hi Everyone,

TMS or chronic pain/symptoms caused by inner tension is a present moment, chronic, mind-body syndrome. This is truth!

Realize, that this present moment, mind-body syndrome is caused by the same patterns continuing to be repeated day after day in your life over the past 10, 20 or 30 years. We have chronic patterns of generating inner tension and these same chronic patterns of repressing emotional energy (occurring daily), which manifest into chronic pain/symptoms. Chronic is not a bad word, it is simply defined as: continuing for a long period of time or marked by frequent recurrence.

Every single day in a letter or consultation the theory of "deeply repressed emotions" being the cause of continued TMS symptoms is made crystal clear to me that this is just not the case. Two examples that happened yesterday are below. This is a major “getting stuck” point in people trying to reverse TMS. It is!

This is why we think psychological in the present moment. Sarno told us 30 years ago that pain is a Signal to become aware of how we are being. Not how were we being 20 years ago, but how are we being/acting/behaving/thinking right now.

Once we think psychological we then get the choice to remain focused on the pain/physical (not ideal) or become aware of how we are being and redirect or change to a higher quality (more open & balanced, or less tight & rigid) way of being. This is think clean and it allows us to be mindful or aware of how we are being and then deliberately and consciously choose a way of being that doesn’t generate as much inner tension/pressure. Then we continue to move in that direction with a thought by thought, in the moment-by-moment way. Since we repress emotional energy on a present moment basis when we are in our old chronic patterns, these new patterns that we choose are allowing us to experience or open up to our emotional energy instead of repress it. Right now!

Yesterday during a consultation, a gentleman that I will call Bob shared with me, rather casually, that a couple of things have happened recently that he concluded might be the cause. Bob was doing well reversing the effects of TMS during the week but was fearful of the weekends. Bob said, “my wife made plans for us to have a get-away weekend and relax”. Bob realized that this relaxing weekend was now an event that he was projecting fear into and putting pressure on himself to “not have a bad weekend of pain”. The 2nd incident was Bob’s brother inviting him on a 5-day golf outing. Bob realized that he was also projecting fear and putting pressure on himself to be physically fine for this event. Both of these situations are examples of our present moment thoughts/fears/expectations/pressure generating inner tension that manifest into painful effects. Being aware that these situations are a big part of the cause is helpful. Bob is now beginning to journal about these situations (pre and post) to allow him to open up and understand his feelings. Bob is also watching his present moment thoughts about these situations and is beginning to tell a “new” story rather than go into the fear of a worse case scenario.

I received the email below from a person who is reading his 4th TMS book. He knows what TMS is, knows he has it but hasn’t received relief yet.

“I "accepted" the diagnosis of TMS for myself on Jan 27 of this year. Since that time, other than a slight increase in my ability to exercise, there has been no real pain abatement. My back and leg pain are the worst aspects, but the pain is certainly widespread. I've been officially diagnosed with many things, to include fibromyalgia.

The information you sent below really resonates with me. I am beginning to believe that the simple digging out of repressed emotions or events that happened decades ago is not going to help me release my pain. If it could, I think it would have happened already. Maybe it works for some, but not xxxx xxxxx.

I have made the discovery that for me, one of the things that generates a HUGE amount of tension is: ANY public-speaking event...even a staff meeting. Basically, any event, regardless of the size of the audience, where I am required to deliver a brief. The requirements of public speaking for a xxxxxx Officer are very frequent, so you can imagine the pain I've been experiencing. It's been of the most severe quality.

Let me tell you what happened to me that supports your hypothesis that chronic pain is a phenomenon of "the present moment". While listening to a talk radio program in my car 2 weeks ago, I decided to call in to the program and voice my opinion. Note that my speaking on this program is, in effect, a public speaking event, since there are literally thousands of people in the audience that can hear me speak. What happened? Amazingly, my back pain went from about a 4/10 to a 9/10! I was sitting there in my car, getting ready to deliver my message to the host and the radio audience, and the anxiety being generated within me was clearly having a direct impact on my back pain. The fact that I realized the phenomenon did not reduce my pain level, however. Anyway, I eventually got on the program, spoke for about 3 minutes (effectively even with the pain), and about 5 minutes later, my back pain returned once again to what it was before.

This is a crystal-clear demonstration for me that the anxiety I was generating was clearly influencing my TMS-pain, but as you say, in the present moment! I therefore need to find a way to short circuit the thinking patterns I've developed, and make them into patterns that do not generate this horrible pain.”

I hope these real-life examples help you understand the present moment creation of TMS pain/symptoms. Even when the present moment creation has been occurring and reoccurring for long time.

Whether you are stuck in a 3 month episode of piriformis or a 20 year battle of back pain and other symptoms, the most efficient and effective reversal of effects is understanding how you are being/acting now and making changes to these present moment patterns now!

Hi Monte
Thanks for this interesting post and your endless effort to help us out.

With respect to your experience and knowledge on TMS and it's equivalents I find it difficult to believe that the condition is ONLY a present moment chronic mind/body syndrome because my own experience proved me otherwise.

I think there is just many different ways to overcome the syndromes because there is not only one cause for them but likely more than one. Of course there are ways to heal that will appeal to a larger amount of people more than others simply because of the belief system or culture one comes from and it seems to me like it's what you're aiming at with the method you mentioned which I have no doubt works well indeed. The Stories and comment you received are there to prove it but there is not only one truth, you must give the other truths a chance too or what are all the other people who suffer and can not relate to this particular truth going to do?

I observed that once someone has found something that works it is simply good enough to do the job well regardless to what it's called or how it works, the fact is that sometimes one doesn't even know what did it for sure... Sometimes the pain disappears completely without doing anything or being aware of anything and sometimes awareness makes it worse. The brain and the body have so many different ways to heal still unknown to us.

This being said I also learn a lot and enjoy reading all of your posts and I'm certain I'm not the only one so please keep posting for us.Thanks.
