I don't know what's going on. I woke up and received an email from a friend telling me that her teeth hurt. I don't know if that's what triggered this off. Today is a stressful day for me for a certain reason to begin with, a day that brings back some memories and makes me feel sad. The pain started at 10 a.m. and I took 2 Advils. It went away and at 3 I needed more Advil. And again at 8. It is now 10 and the Advil isn't helping or maybe it is and the pain would be even worse. My upper right molars hurt, 2 of which are root canaled. I can't localize it to one tooth. I have terrible fear about any intervention on these 3 teeth because they are covered by one crown (looks like 3 cosmetically but is one)...so if anything had to be done, it would be a difficult process. If one had to be pulled, they'd have to carve it out...new crowns, expensive, etc.

I had this area x rayed a year ago and will get new x-rays but I am wondering if this could be my sinuses since they are so close. I don't expect anyone to answer that question...because it could be. Or could nerves be causing pain this bad? I have had dental pain with no apparent cause for 15 years, I am a clencher and will get a bite plate but any feedback would be appreciated. Can this be TMS? Has anyone had pain that stayed despite ibuprofen in their teeth (which turned out to be nothing dental). I am so scared now that I am shaking. I have all the books...I don't know what to think now to help me get rid of this pain.

Just to let you know I read your recent replies and thank you. It comes and goes. I am having dental work done, one pain was actually decay so not TMS but I have a stinging since yesterday on the gum right behind my front tooth. I worry that it's the tooth but it has happened before and the x-rays never show anything. This kind of stuff really ruins my day, my life. Worrying about toothaches and especially when they find nothing...it's so frustrating.

Susan, I don't know if the pain is something wrong with your teeth or TMS, but by your lead in sentence above, I would be highly suspicious.

Many people probably can't fathom that their own brain could create such alarming symptoms, but I know it can. That is exactly what happened with me on several occasions over the last 10-12 yrs. The first was tinnitus (ringing in ears), which I had for over a year and I know now, I never actually had! Another time I was convinced I had MS and had many of the symptoms. That too I never had. There are many other lesser examples, including one current example (no need to mention). If you had asked me point blank during the "tinnitus" and "MS" periods what level of belief I had that I had these conditions, it would have been at least 90%!

Just something to consider.

Relax, I have had TMS for many years & have had alot of different symptons. Interestingly, I only had teeth pain one time. It was several years ago.I was under an enormous amount of stress at the time. My molars along with a few front teeth were killing me. I pretty well knew it was stress related & it only lasted a couple of days. Wish that was the case with body pain.

Hi Susan
I hope the pain went away by now and although I often forget to celebrate mine I wish you a Happy Belated Birthday.

Now I thought of something while reading your painful posts.
When all is well( not when you are in pain) what happens if you grab the teeth where the pain starts between your thumb and your index one by one and try to move them slightly from side to side ( don't pull them out tho!) Do you feel any pain underneath any of them? or does it release a kind of metallic or unpleasant taste in your mouth soon after?

Also I was told that a tooth that has a deeply buried infection will develop a fistula on the side of the gums at some point because the infection needs to come out somewhere and considering that you've been hurting on and off for a while you'd have some manifestation of an infection somewhere a dentist could help you with.

I read somewhere in this forum a while ago that it is only the ending of a nerve that can communicate a signal of pain to the brain . a strike or a compression or problem on the length of the nerve itself
produces a different result like numbness or tingling etc...
So it's important to find where the stimulation of the nerve comes from. Maybe an acupuncturist may provide a clue about what does what on the path of the dental nerve root.

I would also try to find out precisely how syndrome imperatives of TMS and maybe other ailments as well manifest trough teeth pains in order to identify similarities in the patterns and then let a professional figure it out. If for some reason pain reappears while you're getting some answers to your questions and not otherwise the pain can have a psychosomatic origin.
It is also worth investigating why your feelings of loneliness have such a high impact on your emotional stability . I mean you already know it does so it will come as no surprise but why/how it affects you so much is where the restriction leading to the emotional overflow may be.

You may have to wait a year before you get the answer to that (or maybe not if you arrange for a delayed celebration) but what if you invite a few people over for the occasion and see what their response is and what ever that response does to you?
It's better to worry about something you know than something you don't. At least you'd have some power over it.
Keep it simple. No expectations there just observing what happens will be very interesting and maybe very helpful to you. What have you got to loose?

I did read your post . Thanks for the nice words. I don't see why nobody would show up for your late birthday party and if you get a tooth ache in the middle of it well then cancel it or let people there enjoy themselves ( it doesn't have to be at your place so you can excuse yourself if something goes wrong) ultimately it is the result of the experiment you're interested in this time. if it is a great party then you will double the score...

Susan, maybe it would help to make a note that the pain was "here today and gone tomorrow." Excellent demonstration of TMS doing its tricky number. Have a great day.

Hi Winnie, I woke up and as of now, no pain, just vague head and temple pain and I hope it stays away. I have to get to work so can't write a proper reply but I want to tell you how much I appreciate your comments and support. Thanks for the birthday greeting too...yeah, I know it must be all this coming out that I am not even aware of. I am just so stressed about everything! And I have been through the dentists' comments too "see a neurologist" "you worry too much about your teeth" and a million "there's nothing there". Frustrating to say the least.

Happy Birthday! The rage of today can cause pain, absolutely. Arguments with friends, growing older, feeling a sense of loss...all these life conflicts and situations can be painful. Of course you already know this.

I see that your dental situation is complicated and I'm no dentist. But, let me suggest that instead of picturing your teeth as old and full of bacteria (as you say), try picturing them as strong and healthy. You also use the word hate with regard to your teeth.

Louise Hay's "Heal Your Body" tells many stories about how disease and syndromes can be reversed by giving yourself more positive messages, envisioning health, etc. She's always a good read.

I just wanted to share that my situation was very severe. Severe pain in every tooth, even the front, in both cheeks, migraines, too many symptoms to list. My dentist told me that it was very unusual for ALL the teeth to hurt. I remember complaining to my endodontist about my front teeth hurting, asking him what he did/what was causing and it, and he good naturedly attempted humor, asking me, "what have you been smoking?" Not the best bedside manner IMO, but I got the point. I was freaked about the procedure, the pain, and about nine other things at that point in my life (just five months ago). For me, it was all TMS.

Hi Winnie. I had a bad night last night worrying about something and today was a day that brings back memories, like I mentioned. Yesterday, the other side hurt but not as much as this. I know a lot about teeth and I know that root canaled teeth can abscess. I had a non- rc tooth pulled a year ago and they saw nothing on the x-ray but when it was pulled (it hurt enough, I knew something was wrong), it was very infected.

So this is what I worry about. They can see infection starting on a periapical x-ray where they see the root and the top of the filling used in the root canals...but maybe it's slow growing. These root canals were done about 25 years ago and I just picture them getting old and full of bacteria....just rotting away.

I can't get a night guard because I am getting an implant and it would have to be redone later. I just don't have the money. I have had 2 night guards in the past. I am hoping it's my sinuses. What's blowing my mind is that even my right front tooth hurt before. So that plus the 3 back teeth...it just seems like it's traveling down the nerve. I do know about the muscles referring to the teeth. I had fibromyalgia and have the books that show how the mouth muscles radiate to certain teeth. I hope it's that, I just hope it's not my teeth. I so much want to do what you say and resist pulling the teeth but you can understand how at this moment I wish some merciful dentist would just yank them all, give me dentures so I would never have to deal with this again. I hate teeth!!

Do you think this is because of me being upset last night over a misunderstanding with someone that I care for? OK, I will be honest, today is my birthday and it upsets me, I miss the old days and my family and the way it used to be. I had to blow out my own candle and I was crying. So...maybe this gives anyone who is reading this a better picture. Being alone on my birthday stinks and I have been sad all day. Where is the repressed rage, I don't know, all I know is the rage of today. And I guess that can cause the same pain. I am so confused. Did you ever have the pain in your molars ALL day? Or for days?
winnieboo Posted - 02/28/2010 : 20:21:55
Hi S, It could be sinuses if it's affecting your upper molars, but it's very likely not sinuses. I have had root canals in both my upper molars and I still had pain. Finally, last month, I was fed up and desperate and I agreed to a bite plate Now, I'm 90% pain free. No kidding. This is Sarno heresy, I know, b/c he says no PT and no orthodics. However, I was in dire straits, my dentist insisted, and my feeling was that I was in pain in so many areas, what did I have to lose (besides the major $$ for the piece of plastic). The bite plate has relaxed my muscles so much. And of course, muscles tension is classic TMS. I think we chatted about this on another thread. There are several trigger points (again, tense muscles) in the cheek, jaw and neck that refer pain to the molars. Do yourself a favor and resist pulling or carving teeth. There are other answers.
