2 years now I have been reading Sarno, listening to nothing else but Sarno, watching Sarno's videos, thinking about my problems, visiting this board 17,000 times a day. I still fall into the same cycle. My back bothers me at random times, mostly when I sit. I get 3 or four horrible spasms a year that last a month. The spasms are not tight nor sharp, they are this internal nerve irritation that is so painful you feel dizzy. During the spasms I can move around and do anything yet I am in horrible pain. Even standing still, I still bring on the next pain. I have never heard anyone who has experienced this type of back pain. When I get over the weird spasms, my regular sciatica returns for the rest of the year. Help me! I am ready to flip out.

TMSPain,

Get Dr. Schechter's cassettes or CD's. I've been listening to them in the car. It's like seeing a TMS doctor accept you can listen for hours. I am suprised how much stuff I forgot from reading Sarno. All your TMS questions will be ansewered on the tapes. He was a student of Sarno's. Schecter does a great job of bringing TMS to life and he makes the concepts very easy to understand. TMS is very simple. Many people make it more complicated than it needs to be. The tapes are available from the links.

Hey Matt.
Dave has a valid point. We've discussed it at length....you're just hyped up right now,but when you calm down, you really need professional help.

You've discussed it in the past, but keep insisting you need a TMS therapist...well guess what? That very insistence is the reason WHY the pain won't go away.

Thinking about my problems Did NOT make my pain go away...it was work..very HARD work...it took every minute of my day,and perhaps I was fortunate that I wasn't working at the time.

Have you done the work?

I bought "The art of hitting .300" by Charlie Lau 7 years ago.....I didn't hit over .300 until last year.I would get discouraged because I wasn't "getting it".

I didn't hit .550 last year because I all of a sudden got it....I hit .550,because I finally had taken enough at bats and FAILED and gone back and studied, and FAILED and gone back and studied, and FAILED and finally GOT IT.

If I didn't have all the failure,I wouldn't have had the success.Many times I felt like I just sucked,and wasn't going to get it....but I did.

Unlike hitting, where I only got 3 chances a week to improve, you have your brain 24 hours a day...If I could have hit for say...15 minutes a day,I don't think it would have taken 7 years.

You've admitted in the past to not working that hard. You will not beat TMS by osmosis. You obviously have a deep rooted scary thing that you are afraid of coming to the surface...that's the only reason the pain comes.

I also will affirm,as others have mentioned that you only and always spend most of your posting times discussing the Physical.

Hit the phones, and don't be picky.

I did,and so have many others.

peace.

So.....have you done the WORK?

If you've actually had NO change after 2 years then you need psychotherapy.

Sorry, but I don't understand. How can you possibly "have exhausted writing about the psychological things" when you've only been journaling for a few weeks? There's a lifetime of stuff that's causing this pain. It may take a little longer than 3 weeks to uncover it.

And you didn't answer: have you tried psychotherapy? If not, why not? That seems like a logical next step if you're having a hard time getting to the source of your anger.

I have been applying Sarno for 2 years. I only talk about the pain because I have exhausted writing about the stresses and psychological things. I have written and thought more about that than the pain. i just come back to the pain, because there is no change.

Of all the things in your message, "thinking about my problems" receives only a passing mention. Yet, physical descriptions of your pain take up nearly the entire message.

You are (1) still too focused on the physical; (2) likely not doing enough to uncover your sources of rage.

Instead of obsessing about the pain and other things, take time each day to journal and really sit quietly and try to feel what's going on in your life.

Most of all, give it time. You've only been at it a few weeks. You have to have a long-term view, otherwise your short-term frustrations will derail your recovery.

"visiting this board 17,000 times a day."

Oh my god. You really have to cool down a bit!
The board is wonderful but I think that you can obsess over anything and that IS NOT good.
I know itīs not easy but you have to be a bit more "easy-going".
Even when I had full blown fibromyalgia I didnīt let that totally dominate my life. The keepoint (I know that I right know have bad pain, so perhaps you do not belive me, but I WAS nearly painfree for six months)for me was to stop obsess and concentrate on other things.
Perhaps you need psychotherapy? I am sure you have some bad things going on in your life...

TMSPain, I have read a few of your posts and wonder why it is that you only post about physical issues. I am fairly new here so maybe I missed earlier posts of yours, but I've noticed that you rarely post anything psychological. Occasionally you mention that you have been stressed but are you really delving into the ANGER that anxiety brings on? Each post I read of yours is related only to the pain: it comes on in the rain, when you sit, or that you're obsessed by it, or whatever. I know that you say you have been reading Sarno regularly for the last 2 years, but it sounds like you only started journaling recently. Are you continuing to journal? And really go deep to think about your rage? What comes up for you when you think about your problems? Have you tried psychotherapy?

I have found this a great board to start opening up psychologically and sharing with the world what's happened in my childhood and what's happening in my life. Over on the dizzy forum we are chatting about this all day long, and IT REALLY HELPS. Something about telling other people about my anxiety and anger begins to chip away at the shame, guilt and rage I'm realizing that I feel. I don't care what I write as people here are very responsive and empathic and hell, I'm probably never going to meet anyone anyway!

My point is that it would be great to read more stuff from you about what's going on in your mind ABOVE AND BEYOND your pain. Are you actually aware of feeling angry? What makes you angry? What was your childhood like? The point here (I think) is not just to endlessly read Sarno but to get at that angry stuff. It may be, for you, that you need to start really feeling those feelings, in which case psychotherapy could be very helpful. As one who's done a fair amount of therapy, I can assure you that it will help you understand yourself and your feelings much better, and uncover anger where you'd no idea it existed before.

One further comment -- your name suggests to me that you are still identifying with the pain of TMS, rather than the syndrome itself. You are much more than "TMSPain". Won't you show us other aspects of yourself?
