What is Think Clean – It is the transforming therapy in TMS. It is the quality of energy you communicate to your nervous system and it is this quality of energy that reversesTMS pain and other symptoms.
Think Clean is not Pollyannaish thinking, positive thoughts and it is not a way to avoid or deny your feelings.
Think Clean is a process and it is a practice with a few parts: 1. Emotional Awareness – What are my dominant traits/patterns? How do I behave, what do I think when I go into my chronic, tension generating, emotion repressing patterns. How am I feeling – physically and emotionally?
2. Quality of focus/attention – Where do I choose to put my focus. For example, when you are feeling overwhelmed, you can choose to focus on being overwhelmed and why (generates tension) or you can choose to focus on being calm and how do I get to that state (provides relief).
If you are in a competitive mode, you can focus on impressing others, winning at all cost, worrying about what if I don’t win, what are others thinking about me (generates tension) or you can choose to focus on bringing the best of yourself, keeping your attention on what you are doing, how you are doing it, being mindful of how you can bring your best effort, thought and action. (provides relief and potential for peak performance)
3. Experiencing emotional energy versus repressing emotions. You can choose to experience your life situations with your old, conditioned, chronic thoughts (this is repression) or you can choose to experience your life situations by being with your emotional energy and not going into the old, familiar, repressing patterns. In other words you challenge your repression (fear) and experience your emotions (energy) by doing the opposite of what you usually do. If you usually go into outburst, instead you breathe, stay within yourself, don’t raise your voice, don’t throw a tantrum and express to someone or yourself “this is what I am feeling right now, I feel that I am being unfairly blamed…” If you usually shutdown and hold stuff in, you challenge this repression activity by not shutting down and not holding in. You open up and language to someone, “I want you to know what I am experiencing right now, I feel that you are being unfair to me, or I feel that you are not listening to me and this is why I feel this way…”
Please understand this is not about labeling your emotion and investigating why it is present. (do that with your therapist or while journaling) This is about allowing your emotion (energy) to be, to move and not get stuffed down and stuck in the present time of your day-to-day life. This is possible when you choose not to avoid or deny it. People use their constant worry, controlling, pleasing, striving and perfecting thoughts/behaviors to avoid feeling (allowing) their emotions. You can now use Think Clean to reverse this!
Helpful Hint: Use different language with yourself in this process. emotion or feelings = energy, feeling an emotion = allowing energy, I don’t want to repress my emotions, I want to feel them = I want to experience my emotional energy and allow it to be open
Dr. John Sarno’s masterpiece was telling us what TMS is. He told us to think psychologically, stop treatments and resume activity. He alerted us to the fact that repressed emotions are involved, that a distraction/pain strategy is at work to keep us from experiencing these emotions and that that Type A traits are common in people who experience TMS.
Our masterpiece is now to take this information and put it to work in our life. We change the effects of TMS when we choose to actively engage in this healing process. Some of you are stuck, just wanting your symptoms to magically go away without you changing anything!
TMS is not some disorder or a syndrome that is just happening to you. There is not a magic TMS treatment or a special TMS doctor that is going to end your symptoms without you also engaging in the process.
TMS is a chronic mind body pattern that is caused by thoughts and behaviors that are: 1. Generating inner tension, which is automatically being communicated to our nervous system and then manifested into symptoms by our autonomic system.
2. Repressing emotional energy, which also generates inner tension that automatically gets communicated to our autonomic nervous system and manifested into symptoms.
Sarno told us Type A traits were involved and now we know how. When we are in these traits we are more likely to generate inner tension and repress emotions with our thoughts and behavior patterns.
This is not about changing our personality traits—for the most part we are wired the way we are wired. This is about changing the fearful parts of us that are generating inner tension and repressing emotional energy. We can change the quality of our thoughts and behaviors. We can challenge the fearful part of our personality and choose to feel or experience our emotional energy instead of acting out (fear) and going into repression modes, which causes stuck emotional energy and the manifestation of symptoms.
This practice requires courage, discipline and willpower. When you choose to feel or experience your emotional energy rather than act out (repress) you change everything! In TMS this means you did not repress and generate inner tension but instead you allowed your emotional energy to be in it’s natural, open and free state.
* Identify one of your traits/patterns that generate inner tension.
* Pay attention; be mindful of when you are becoming active in this pattern.
* Challenge it by not going into your old way of being (thoughts/behaviors)
* State to yourself where you are: Tell yourself you are present and you know what is going on. “here I am, I am feeling rage and I am getting ready to go into my outburst pattern”.
* Ask yourself a question, “how can I be here in this rage and not repress, how can I be more open, my intention is to let my emotional energy be and not repress it”
* Take a mindful breath (you are staying present and buying yourself a few seconds so that you don’t automatically go into your old patterns)
* Stay present, be in your situation, be with whatever feeling is here with you and do notgo into your old patterns (thoughts/behaviors that you usually go into).
This is feeling or experiencing your emotional energy and not repressing it and it changes everything. Your entire inner communication has just been transformed.
Road Block: For some of you this is too simple. Don’t get me wrong, it is hard, challenging work, but for some there is no fireworks and you believe that in order to change this pain pattern you have been experiencing in your body for the past 5 years then surely there must be some big huge explosion taking place. And you are going to say, “if I just changed everything then why do I still have this pain symptom”. I know that you want instant gratification and physical proof that what you just experienced is really working! For a few days give up the whom, how, why and when reasoning stuff and experience your transformation!
What do they say about faith or trust? You can’t experience faith unless you are in a situation that requires you to have it!
