After having microdisectomy surgery on Oct 1st I continued to have sciatica pain. It did relieve major pain from a ruptured disc though. I was reminded about TMS and Dr Sarno so I got the book and wished I'd had it before electing to have surgery. After reading the book I realized that I've had a from of TMS for over 35 years and am convinced that I need to stick with the ideas put forth by Dr Sarno.

I've had some pain free days after reading the HBP and after going to the gym and increasing my work I started having burning and pain in my hip. I have had serious anxiety since after the surgery and one thing I'm afraid of is that the pain from working out is because of being so close to the surgery. Even though it's been over 2 months I'm not sure if that's a good enough time to heal fully. The surgery is really not that invasive but I had been in pain for 3 months prior to surgery.

That's more of a question for a Dr.I suppose...or not! My real question is can the pain be getting worse the closer I get to the real causes and that the anxiety, or TMS, is trying to keep the focus on the pain being from surgery or structual so I create more pain to focus on and more anxiety to create even more pain to keep me in a cylce where I stay away from more emotional causes.

I currently am journaling and started working with a Therapsit who strongly believes in the mind body connection.

Any help is appreciated. I guess I'm just scared and not sure what to think.

John

I think you answered your own question very well.

The fear and uncertainty perpetuate the symptoms.

Yes, remove the phrase "bad back" from your vocabulary. If your arm gets sore you don't have a "bad arm"; if you get headaches sometimes you don't have a "bad head"; and having hemorrhoids doesn't make you a "bad ass."

Good stuff Skizzik!! What I got from you and seem to understand from reading these posts is that TMS is very powerful and cunning. You also hit on something that I only recently found out about myself. That is how I've always identified myself with having a bad back. That has to change and I know it's a slow process, or can be. Instead of a bad back just a case of bad tms instead. I like that!! Thanks

since you had surgery, the argument for getting active "too close to surgery" will always exist in the conventional sense.

Take things easy, not because you need more healing, but the mental aspect, the well oiled tms gun in your head is trigger ready. Allow it to rust up, and eventually forget that you ever had a "bad back". Allow your brain to "de-wrap" itself around your former back issues and think of yourself as someone who had a bad case of TMS.

Wether you needed surgery or not is'nt important. You could argue about with yourself forever. You had it, now move on. Don't be an advocate of back surgery, or an antagonist, it's in the past, just live.

Who said it best here, hmmm, can't remember her name, she has'nt posted in a while....but I always recall when she had intense pain in her leg I think, and she was a runner, she simply "bared" the pain and it eventually went away and she did'nt argue wether it was real or not, but she implied she did'nt care.

I think looking back, wether you needed surgery or not, you'll come to the conclusion, after resolving issues in your life that cause you tension, you'll find it peculiar how you don't need surgeries anymore, or don't think of yourself as someone with a bad back.
