I picked up "The Self Talk Solution" which is a companion piece to "WTSWYTTYS". There is a fantastic chapter in the book about the subconscious mind that echoes Sarno. Hemlstetter discusses ten rules of the subconscious mind. This is a great list to read, re-read, and re-read again for anyone who is struggling with overcoming negative programming. The book goes into more detail about each point. I recommend tracking down a copy if you can. It is, unfortunately, no longer in print.

1. The human brain is a physiological organ which, through a specific electrochemical process, collects, processes, stores, and acts on information it receives.

2. Information presented to the subconscious mind triggers both a physiological response and a psychological response.

3. Any information presented to the subconscious mind is always linked to and affected by previously stored information.

4. The subconscious mind is a neutral mechanism which responds to information without subjective regard for its accuracy or its value.

5. The subconscious mind holds no beliefs or biases other than those which it receives as a result of its programming.

6. When faced with two or more programs that are in conflict with each other, the subconscious will attempt to act on the program which is the strongest.

7. The strength of the program is influenced by the number of times the same or similar information is presented.

8. The strength of the program is influenced by the perceived importance of the program source.

9. The strength of the program is influenced by the amount of emotion associated with the program.

10. The subconscious mind will, at all times, attempt to act on its dominant operative program.

Read this list a few times and really think about each point.

I think #9 is the biggest problem with TMS or chronic pain sufferers. We attach a lot of fear/anxiety/emotion to our "programmed" pain and this strengthens its hold on us.
I have been working on replacing these emotions and thoughts with good ones. It takes a long time to see results but it works. It took me almost two years of trial and error to finally "get it" and see positive results.
I will print this list and put it on my fridge. Thanks!

This is exactly what happened to me. I wasn't fully able to overcome my symptoms until I recognized and controlled the emotions around the symptoms themselves.

Excellent, Excellent and again Excellent. Makes total sense when put into the context of TMS which I am doing at the moment.
