About 12 weeks ago, I woke up (sleeping in an awkward position) to intense pain in the left trapezius area. I thought it was a stiff neck..so I let it go. After 3 weeks..I decided to to see an Ortho..who ordered and MRI and told me I had 2 herniated discs. They recomended a neurosurgeon. I went to see one a couple of weeks later...and was told I needed surgery. I haven't done it yet. Lately, the pain is diminishing...but my left tricep/pectoral is much weaker. I lift weights as a hobby..but had to stop when this occurred. I attempted to lift with light weights..and found the left pec and tri to be much weaker. I just started reading the "Divided Mind" I'm hoping this will help. I really don't want surgery..but the weakness is scaring me (I don't want it to become permanent)

Thanks!

Thanks so much for all the responses. I am def. not pursuing surgery at this point..and have actually started working out again this past week. It is challenging when the weakness comes to play during my workout, but I'm going to continue to do so and listen to Dr. Sarno's work. Thanks again!

Eileen,

Thanks for your kind words. It has been a long journey and it continues. I will try to keep this simple, but I can get wordy. Bear with me. I have been seeing one of Dr. Sarno's counselors; Dr. Evans. Dr. evans is in regular contact with Dr. Sarno and I chat wih him evey few months. Dr. Evans teaches me to be more mindful (what is going on now), and be more in the moment (again, what is now, not later, or yesterday, etc ), then you combine this with being aware of your somatic experience. IE: what is going on in your body. What is going on in your body, is a messenger of what is going on for you at that moment. Then you breath, or meditate and just be aware and curious about what is going on. You DON'T TRY TO FIX ANYTHING. Please understand I didn't get there over night. I have recently added meditation into this. And I went out to meetup.com and found a giuded meditation group just 10 minutes from my house. It is wonderful.

If you have further interest, you can
--read "Wherever You Go There You Are" Jon Kabit-Zin (mindfulness)
he also has some very new guided meditation tapes about $39
--read "Healing Trauma" (comes with a CD) Peter A. Levine. (felt
sense and your somatic experience
-- you can respond to this thread further
-- you may email me directly. If so, but something obvious about TMS and mindfulness in the subject line, otherwise you will end up inn my SPAM folder.

Also see this discussion thread on the TMSwiki:
http://tmswiki.wetpaint.com/thread/3383681/Why+do+some+people+not+get+on+with+Dr+Sarno%27s+method%3F

I am seeing more interest in this subject. I am thinking about starting a thread here on tmshelp or a page on the tmswiki.

Hi, I am a Dr. Sarno book person. I have not seen him as I live on the west coast. I have read Divided Mind his most recent book in addition to MBP. I am interested in what you refer to as his recent treatment suggestions, ie. present moment, etc. I do meditate in addition to journalling and firmly talking to my subconscious.
What else is he recommending these days that is not in the books?
Sometimes my TMS is stubborn. Thanks,

P.S. I read your story and it is amazing!! Congrats on your skiing. I bet it brings you a lot of joy.

Ironman7,

I am apatient of Dr. Sarno and I have been on my TMS journey since 2003 and I consider myself a success. If your bored, and have about 20 minutes you can read about it here
http://tmswiki.wetpaint.com/account/MatthewNJ

Tons of people are going to give you advice, try not to get overwhelmed, we all mean well. Try different things and Do what works for you ! .

To start, I recommend The Mindbody Prescription. I think that is
written more toward the patient. I believe Dr. Sarno intended the Divided mind as more for practitioners.

Anyway, MBP has in it what is called the "Jim Campobello Method". This is very similar to the plan Dr. Sarno gives his patients. If you follow that it is a great starting place.

Personaly I have moved from Dr. Sarno's printed methodolgy's to some of his newer ones. Mindfulness and Present moment awareness. If you want more on that, let me know. I don't want to overwhelm you either.

Good luck on your journey.

Hi IronMan,

"woke up to intense pain" --- btw - this is common in tms

the weakness you are experiencing is also very common so don't let that alarm you and distract you ---this keeps you in the pain strategy.

As you are reading Divided Mind, remember that the #1 key's to reversing this disorder are to Think Psychological, Resume activities, Stop any treatments designed to "fix" your injury/symptom, and this even means thinking about treatments and thinking about what is wrong with me.

You are just learning about this so this is a work in progress, but the more you can accept the psychological diagnosis and really practice the keys above with confidence the more efficient you healing progress or reversal of this pain strategy will be.

I was going to write a longer reply, but I need to go to bed.

All I can say is talk to the people of this board before you make a hasty decision about a process that is risky and which has vast evidence of having an unfounded basis in biological and medical science.....I.E. "herniation causes so and so and such and such".
