I think her best bet is for her son to get a 2nd/3rd opinion. I know many people who have been misdiagnosed with autoimmune disorders and this is why I'm skeptical. Perhaps it's premature to jump to the TMS possibility.

From what I read, there is no definitive test for AS, but diagnosis is based on risk factors and symptoms. Only in advanced stages can you see physical changes that make it obvious.

2scoops: Either way, I do believe in healing with prayer (my friend is Christian). I have personally witnessed 2 medical miracles that doctors (non-Christian), could not explain and admitted that they were miracles; spiritual or otherwise.

Your welcome. If he is open to the idea of emotions and how they play a role in hs health, I HIGHLY suggest that he reads Henry Wright's A More Excellent Way. A great book that says the mind/spirit and how it affects health. He goes more into how fear, anxiety, etc. affects the production of histamine, adrenaline, oxygen, etc. and how it changes to body.Very into depth and detailed. I would suggest anyone read it, even if your not a Christian. Lot of wisdom in the book. It's written from a pastor.

I also suggest a book called Biblical Foundations of Freedom by Art Mathias. That book gets into the emotions/spirits more. Like fear, anxiety, worry, bitterness, self hate, envy, jealousy, rejection, unloving spirits, etc. That book was my TMS therapist if you will. Not a lot of help here in Ohio so was pretty much alone in my own journey.

I also agree with ragesootheratio, Norman Cousins did heal and he was pretty big on seeking the emotions. Part of his therapy was thathe would watch comedies and laugh to release his tensions. A merry heart does good like medicine.

Some things in this world we may not be able to explain, and yes God does work in mysterious ways.

For what it's worth, Dr Sarno does mention this in Healing Back Pain on page 157:

"In his well-known book, 'The Anatomy of an Illness', Norman Cousins described how he overcame one of these autoimmune disorders, ankylosing spondylitis (a form of rheumatoid arthritis) by recognizing that it was emotionally induced and introducing a kind of humor therapy plus vitamin C. Based on my experience with TMS I am inclined to think that it was his recognition of the role of the emotions in causing the illness that produced the cure. It is possible that, just as in TMS, the illness serves to draw attention away from the realm of the emotions and that when the person recognizes that this is what is going on, and attention is focused on the emotions, the illness loses its purpose and ceases."

I have been in a similar dilemma about one of my brother's friends who is 26 and also diagnosed with AS. He definitely has some TMS traits - mainly having to be / appear 'nice' to everyone all the time - and I did wonder whether this could be a cause or contributing factor: I thought about passing on a Sarno book for him to read.

But then I read about the severity of AS and thought surely anything that fuses your spine can't be TMS. I haven't mentioned Sarno to him as I was worried about giving him false hope. But I know he's in a lot of pain, takes loads of morphine, and it really affects his life.

I saw a few mentions on here of people recovering from AS but nothing that concrete. SarnoFan; really sorry I can't help with your own dilemma but I would also be very interested to hear if anyone has any personal experience of recovery from AS using Sarno or related methods.

I say give it a shot. You said "-really down/depressed
-sensitive but tries not to show it
-living with his depressed father (they are divorced)"

This makes me suspect the pain could be from TMS. I honestly believe that TMS is just touching the surface on many people's symptoms and "diseases". I believe Sarno in the Divided Mind is suspecting "stress" can cause some of the major diseases, like certain cancers. Stress weakens the immune systems and therefore we can be more susceptible to getting autoimmune disorders.

I can imagine this boy may feel rejection, may feel responsible for his parents divorice, etc. The answer lies in within himself. Got to get to the root to get to the cause.

I don't know if you have read or heard of Brandon Bays The Journey, but she got rid of a cancerous tumor in her stomach by forgiving others. She had done everything in her life right as far as eating organic foods, and exercising, but still got this tumor. Just goes to show that the spirit is the most imprtant thing in our life?

Are they Chrisitan, if so, got some excellent resources for them.
