Posted - 10/06/2009 : 10:49:35 Hi, I would love to get some help on the following question:
4 weeks ago I started getting terrible pain in my left rhomboid and shooting pain down my arm. The worst pain by far is in my forearm. I know at 90% is TMS, but the 10% confusing me is the 50% deficit in my left tricept muscle. the nerve pain comes and goes and I can feel it come when i think about it so i know that is TMS. The Rhomboid is better and move around. Can TMS cause muscle deficit? My left tricept is not hurting but is sore when I touch it. Also- it has clearly atrophied in just 4 weeks which is not thrilling to say the least. I'm optomistic about recovery but would love some help on this question. Bless you! Geoffrey |

Hey, I"m here to learn so if you have something teach please share. I"m not having pain in my tricept, just some serious strength deficit and from what I have read it doesn't seem to fit with the diagnosis but i'm open.
The best you can do is have all the tests to rule out serious disease or structural problems.
It is not constructive to get bogged down in the details of the symptoms. The physical manifestations of TMS are highly variable and different for everyone. The unconscious mind is clever and will deliver exactly those symptoms that have the best chance of convincing you they are not TMS.
Once you have had the standard tests to rule out serious problems, you should feel free to ignore the symptoms and follow Dr. Sarno's treatment suggestions. |

Posted - 10/08/2009 : 07:44:58 Thanks MK, I already had the MRI which showed some disc bulges but nothing conclusive. I have not yet done an EMG. But what am I looking for on the EMG that would NOT be TMS? Another TMS question: Do you folks think it's important to experience the repressed rage/anxiety or just knowing it's there is enough?
In any case thanks for your counsel MK. best, Geoff

You don't need an EEG; you need an EMG and possibly a cervical spine MRI. Just get the tests done and get it over with. It will hinder your progress if you allow the doubt to linger. Even if TMS is the most likely cause of your pain, you won't be able to get rid of it without full belief in the diagnosis. Unfortunately, TMS -- for the most part -- remains a diagnosis of exclusion at this time. I'm sure you will be fine and the tests will be fine so just go ahead and get them done so you can put all the fears and doubts behind you. Only then can you wholeheartedly begin to tackle the really important issues that are probably causing your symptoms. Best of luck!
Best, MK

Posted - 10/07/2009 : 12:58:02 Hi Hilary, Thanks for your question. My Doc suggested and EEG but I really don't want to go that route as all my other symptoms suggest TMS- pain comes and goes, moves around, sometimes dissapears for moments when I get. Get's stronger when i go to chiropractors. Right now I stopped all meds and chiro's and I'm trying to be less fixated on the pain which is hard as I"m sure you all know when it get's up to a 8 or 9.
However, the tricep just doesn't seem to fit the TMS (or am i wrong about that?) it's not painful to the touch but simply isn't fully firing.. it's at about 50%. I'm pretty confused by the whole thing and would love some more input.
Gratefully, Geoff

Posted - 10/06/2009 : 14:37:30 Thanks for your response. I"m curious though as it's only been 4 weeks and doesn't seem to be improving along with the other symptoms which are rather it's shrunk a bit in only 4 weeks. thanks

Posted - 10/06/2009 : 11:49:27 I was wondering about a similar thing. I think after babying your back for weeks, months, and especially years, the muscles could get weak, which might make the pain worse. Obviously once the light bulb goes off in your head that it's mentally caused, you might be sore for a while as you use the muscles more, but I would imagine the pain would go away like any normal injury, in a few days or weeks. |
