I have started suffering from anxiety. It has lessened but I do wake up frightened at about 2.00 a.m. and feel scared.

I suppose because I am busy in the day I can concentrate on other things.

I am not depressed as I feel optimistic about the future and go out and about. I am going on a holiday 10 - 21 September.

I just hate to be scared at night.

I was locked in my bedroom as a foster child and remember then the horrible feeling in the stomach and nervousness. It is almost as if I have regressed and feel like a child again.

Does anyone know a herbal remedy that might calm me down at night. I start to get anxious BEFORE bed about 8.00 - 9.00 as I get up early.

A TMS equivalent is anxiety and I have suffered almost every 'anxiety symptom' over my lifetime. I recall a period when I used to be jolted awake at 3 am. Thinking back, I have no clue how it started or exactly when/how it ended.

I do know that I just tried not to obsess or worry about it. If you go to bed worried that "it will happen again", it probably will.
I just changed my routine a bit to 'break' this conditioning. I started to enjoy a hot cup of chamomile tea (no sugar/honey) at bedtime; focused on reading neutral material (business, decor, etc.) and fell asleep nicely. Sometimes I awoke at 3am, sometimes not.

When I did wake up, I tried not to fret about it. I just went and made chamomile tea again, started reading and fell asleep again. It has not happened again for over a year now. I actually forgot about this until I read your post.

This can also have to do with hormonal changes, life changes and new stresses. I would still deal with it the same way.

Hope this helps!

Sounds like classical conditioning to me.
