Posted - 09/04/2009 : 03:51:10 Haven't posted in a while and since I have been trying the TMS approach. My back and leg pain has not really diminished it is still there but I have had a different mental outlook on it and it has not affected me like it did before. I have good days.
Now last week on my job I had to help unload and sort 2 large trucks loaded top to bottom with cases of work boots...Each case was around 35=45 lbs. One truck came in monday night and another came in wed. night... I worked my ass off getting these things unloaded. Lifting, bending, twisting you name it.. As I was doing it I had very little pain anywhere sometimes I would feel a little pain in my back but it was very brief..The leg pain was completely GONE..I felt great a lot like i used to feel. It had been so long since I had that good sore feeling in my body..You know the type of pain after you workout..
Saturday night the bad pain slowly came back and every day since it has gotten worse and worse. What is strange is that everyday there is a new twist to it. For example I would get this stabbing pain in the very lower part of my back then the next day it would be about 6 inches higher and feel like a bruise on the spine, then I would have a day with pain in the penis and testes.. then the next day my legs would hurt the most....
My question is this if all my pain is because of hernatied/ bulging disc's that I have know I have had since last october, would it not make more since it would hurt the most during the unloading of the trucks. I felt pretty good doing the job..Does it make since that it would be 2=4 days after that activity I would feel so much pain? And I must say this is worst pain I have had yet... |

That sort of delay is always the way it has worked for me over the years, so that is not a surprise at all. And it is moving around for you. I think that is a good sign that it is no real injury. One thing I had not shared here and your mention of it brought it back to mind is that when I was in High School years ago, I developed a pain in the right testicle. I finally went to a doctor who told me I "almost had a hernia" and to take it easy for awhile, not play basketball, etc. Well, it finally went away, but up until I learned about TMS, I always anticipated pain in the right testicle and it would periodically appear for awhile. In any case, I'm thinking you may be experiencing something similar to what I did and not to worry too much about that.

Posted - 09/06/2009 : 10:12:40 as Dr. Sarno says in the books, if a nerve were compromised, the result would not be pain, it would be numbness, and/or a complete loss of any feelings. if the pain was from a disc, it would NOT move around, or come and go. If it moves, IT IS TMS. |

Seems you made good progress with your new mental outlook. So, why are you allowing your mind to go back to the physical realm?
Your mind has siezed the opportunity to give you pain that you readily attribute to the physical activity and herniated disc. Don't let it win!
The fact that the pain did not occur during the activity, and that there are "twists" to the symptoms, makes it likely that your brain is playing tricks on you. It is not uncommon for the pain to increase especially when you are thinking that it is due to a structural cause. This is exactly the point of the syndrome: to distract you.
I suggest to re-read Dr. Sarno and do the work. Take a long-term view and accept that the symptoms are TMS. |

Posted - 09/04/2009 : 06:34:48 Well of course TMS theory would say this is a distraction attempt. I would add a wrinkle to that idea which is not at all incompatible. The TMS mindset is a constant builder of muscle tension. As Sarno says, heat "temporarily" works because it relieves this muscle tension but not the cause of the tension. Similarly, doing lots of physical work loosens the muscles up and gets the blood flowing, loosiening muscle tension. Yet, as the days pass after teh activity is over, the tension prone mind slowly ratchets the tension back in place.
I see it as a "mindbody" thing or a "bodymind" thing. Its all the same. |

Posted - 09/04/2009 : 04:50:03 Throughout my 40+ years of low backpain/sciatica my pain nearly always started about 48 hrs after I'd done something that I knew was 'dodgy' ie when I thought I'd 'got away with it'.
I'm sorry I can't explain why this happens but just mentioning that I regularly had a similar experience. |
