Posted - 08/27/2009 : 21:25:37 Hi Everyone, Does anyone have any experience with children, rage and migraine? My uber-perfectionist 8yo was naughty tonight and I put her in a time out on the stairs. She screamed with what I can only describe as primal rage, and was crying uncontrollably.
I went to her to try to calm her down, and her teeth were chattering and her shoulders were rigid and hunched. She could hardly look at me. After about 15 minutes she calmed down and explained to me that she saw lightning and saw things moving, and had spots in front of her, and had a headache that hurt worse than anything. (Me being a TMS migraine-er related to this as an anger-induced migraine. Gee thanks MOM!!!!)
Also as a fellow TMSer this has me concerned that it could be something else. I'm sure it is TMS but her teeth chattering and eye symptoms have me worried. She calmed down and was able to talk about how she was feeling in an amazing way, saying that she felt like the anger inside her was bigger than her body and wanted to get out and she couldn't control herself. I don't want to make a big deal out of this with her, but I also don't want to overlook something that might be medical cause of her sx.
Anyway, I wanted to pop in here and see how ya'll might weigh in on this topic. I know that being her mom, she has a pretty high chance of having TMS, but I want to raise her to have awareness of it and teach her some tactics to help her deal with it.
Thanks all!

It's amazing to me how early the physical can take over from emotional. she's so bright and open, now she knows what this is, hopefully she won't be paralyzed by pain like I was for years.

Posted - 08/31/2009 : 10:50:39 Have you discussed with her action/consequences and listned to her to see if she grasped the concept fully that if you behave badly, you may be removed from a situation until you can think about it and behave in a more acceptable way? I asked because that type of rage reaction seems strong for a time out type of discipline at that age.
I think if she reacted in that way again I'd dig a little deeper. If she has an understanding of the consequences for actions thing and still has the reactions of being so enraged and unable to control herself it might be a good idea for her to have some help channeling all that emotion with a therapist.
I sort of know the feeling of being that angry and not knowing where exactly to put all the emotion and how to diffuse it and I am an adult so it must be frustrating for her to feel it. |

Posted - 08/30/2009 : 12:57:07 How about talking to her in a very down-to-earth way about TMS and how while her anger is very intense, the headache is just a way her mind reacts - not serious, and nothing to get upset about. Explain the overall theory in a simple way.
I think it's great to talk to children about alternative ways of viewing our health: they have not yet been blinded by mainstream medical ideas so are very openminded.
I've talked to my kids since they were tiny about mindbody issues (i.e. how a coldsore on the lip can be a reaction to a feeling of emotional rejection) and now they see it as a normal way to view illness. It's no big deal to them to ask "what's going on?" when they feel ill. Wish I could do as well myself as they do it! |
