Hi guys, I am new to the community, just found out about this forum and hope some of you can help. I have TMS and I am 100% convinced about it. No doubt. It took me more than 6 months to convince myself but I am learning how to control my back pain more more. I had severe back pain attacks in the past years and discovered Sarno about a year ago.
What I cannot figure out is the real reason of my back pain, what is that my mind wants to keep hidden. It seems impossible for me to figure it out by myself and I have the feeling that I will nevere recover completely until I understand this. I have severe pain (which I can more or less control now) in the most unexpected days.
I am afraid that I will need help (money is an issue unfortunatly) but I am also afraid that if I go to a shrink that doesn't know anything about TMS it would be worse for me.
Does any of you have any suggestion? I live in New York.
Thank you
Sergio

Hi Sergio

If you begin to participate in this forum, posting and reading, you might get some insights into what things you may have overlooked,or never even considered.
I joined this forum thinking I might be of service to people trying to recover,as I have had a complete resolution of any physical pain symptoms.
The magic has been, since participating, and reading and writing to others...I've discovered and improved other areas of my health I took for granted as being outside the scope of TMS theory .I haven't had my usual "Holiday" cold/flu,have stopped ahving my chronic ear throat problems, and a lot of other stuff.
I've received way more than I've given.
Corresponding with other TMSers has probably saved me 5 or 6 trips to the doctors office in the few months I've been here!!

come on in and hang out.

Welcome Sergio,

You don't need to know "the event" that caused your TMS. I was looking through MBP trying to find a citation to that effect but gave up. But it's in their someplace and the best thing you can do is crack open your copy and re-read until your questions are all answered.

TMS is caused more by a combination of all the things in life that fill up our reservoir of anger. When it gets full and it threatens to burst out in expressed rage, that is not socially acceptable, it morphs into TMS psychogenic pain, which is acceptable to express in our culture. For example, "How are you doing today?", "My back is killing me." versus "I hate this job, I'm wasting my life".

You don't have to find "the source" of the anger forming rage, you only have to understand how the TMS process works. When you feel pain, you should divert your thoughts to thinking about what is going on in your life that is generating the psychogenic TMS pain outbreak.

For possible events causing "disease" through the mechanism of external rage go to page 26 of MBP and see which events you can relate to. I can usually find five or six things going on that could be spurring my TMS.

Sarno writes about his migraines as a young doctor that lead to his developing TMS theory. On the onset of the migraine, he would shift his thoughts to what was bothering him. He could stop them in their tracks. He said sometimes he could not think of any specific emotional cause but was able to stop the migraine none the less by just trying to.

The good news for you is that for many people, all it takes to get better, is to read the books and learn how TMS works. But if you need the support of a doctor to convice you, you live in Sarno counrty. He practices at NYU hospital. The cost of seeing him will be far less than what the "normal" medical approach would cost. His phone and address should be in the links found on the Home Page if you ever need to see him. Good Luck!
